it just amuses me again and again when people think you can hang 160KGS off the back end of a car and it'll be ok..

You 've got more than that hanging off your front and we don't hear you complaining!

While I was thinking of making a trailer I came upon this.

http://www.sportutilitytrailers.com/Magneta/RHMC1.htm

(I dont know how to do the internet link thing so - cut and paste)

Its far too big for SM's but it coluld be redesigned a lot more simple
and bolt onto a tow bar and would put less than 50 kg on the ball.

Tyre wear would be virtually nil as there are no forces acting on the rear wheel.

I can only imagine what a race wet would look like after 2 or more hours being dragged along the motorway

What happens if you get a puncture?

Go for a trailer, it's far simpler in the end

Years ago I had a bike rack on the back of my Cavalier to carry a KDX200.

Yes it weighed a fair bit, but the worse part was the fact that the bike stuck out of both sides. I used to worry about hitting things with the bike wheels.

Then I modified my 3' x 4' box trailer drawbar so a bike can sit with the front wheel there.... works perfect and nicely balanced.

MMnnnn though closer theres still a LOT of cars that wont comply !
the site states that the weight is typically 50-60% of the weight of the bike !
So even a CRF/ Berg at approx 100KGs will still be in the 50-60KGS catergory !

My Main worry would be wear on the chain/sprox....Tyre as stated above, also the gearbox!, theres NO oil being splashed around by the oil pump and being forced down all the galleries in the box.....
Askin for trouble I reckon !

Bike racks are excellent.......on a 4x4.......120mph uphill/ down dale.
The best way to transport a racing motorcycle from A to B...........Period.

Trailers of any kind (unless its a brand new Ifor Williams and has been pdi'd and serviced within the past hour and you are only travelling 1 mile ) are shit.

Wheel bearings are made of chocolate.
Suspension units get cancer within 6 weeks of purchase.
Punctures...........FACT : trailers get punctures 1 billion times more often than any other road going vehicle.
Lights....work once and after that even earthing straps the thickness of jump leads wont cure it......could be something to do with the "Quality" lights that come as standard (You know, the one's you cant buy lenses for).
Trailer brakes........dont make me laugh.

For some strange reason, even with all the above taken into account..trailers get nicked on a regular basis......so you need a £100 chain to secure it.

Trailers are built by the same folk who designed the Tardis.....however small they are, they seem to take up a disproportionate ammout of room when not in use

Simply put.....towing ANYTHING is for idiots.

Know a bloke who used to race a gsxr when I had my 250 proddy in '89, used a horse trailer to meets with great success..just make sure you 'muck it out' first

If you're after a cheap prefect towcar PM me, I may have just what you want(and my wife being 'horsey' I know what you need )

My earlier post may or may not be biased due to the fact that my darling wife that i love deeply managed to turn the reasuringly expensive internal parts of a Jeep V8 auto gearbox to a grey coloured fish paste type material ( its still warm 3 weeks later) by towing a horse trailer through deep mud with all the temp warning guages bending their needles.

The fact that it wasn't one of our horses at the time did not help matters.

Been carrying my XR 400 on a rack on back of a C max for past 5 years. Two jorneys a year (at least) through France; must have saved price of bike in tolls and cheaper ferry price. No problems at all. Handling is ok..Think Porsche and VW had engine behind back axle for years.(Have a look at a 911).Dont really think weight distribution is an issue;car weighs nearly 2 tonnes when loaded. I drive car carefully but maintain 80mph on toll roads.Thinking of removing front wheel (of bike !)and attaching fork bottoms to rack;think it would help with wind resistance ;ie shorten bike)

I do fasten ends of rack to mounts indside car (to stop twisting) ; strap bike from tail gate hinges and have spacer between rack and car to stop bike going toward car under braking.Bike is rock solid if you do it correctly. Stopped by french police who examined rack ,pulled and pushed bike; smiled and disappeared . Personally think its safer than a trailer..

Thought about trailing bike on a front wheel carrier.. Not sure about the mounts on those.. What happens to straps when bike goes up/down realative to car..And dont fancy taking chain off/changing wheel. But seen quite a few recently going through france so ???
