a mate has suggested a trip down to france this summer.he's got a gsx1400,so he'll be ok,the only bike i have is a duke 2 and i think it might turn out to be a bit of an ordeal.taking the car 'would not be keeping in the spirit of the thing' he said.
anyway i thought i'd have a look at some ktm luggage, jeez have you seen the price of that stuff?
does anyone know of a cheaper alternative? particularly for a tank bag

KTM and touring?
Touring and KTM?
And touring KTM?
And KTM touring?

Nope, it doesn't matter which way round I try it, it just doesn't compute or give that feeling of reality.
Did you not see "The long way round" on TV? KTM's don't do touring, they said so on the program. Something like "they (the bikes I think) won't make it".

I'd get a beemer and try asking your question again. :burnout:

what the hell are you abaaht HuskyD, i traveled from the smoke back to Lincoln on my 96 duke, 147 miles and it was a piece of piss.
i'd love to have a tour on mine and would gladly do it one day this year.

new oil and filters before you start the trip, fill up every 70miles, keep an eye on the oil, brake pads and tyres, cruise at 70-80 all day long and bobs yer auntie

Paulj is a sexually over active sadist, who has an arse made of titanium. I would not ride my XR650 further than 150 miles without an anesthetic It would spoil the trip as you would be so uncomfortable. A 150 mile round trip is enough for me on my motard.

You need something more comfy in my opinion. I would go naked bike /sportsbike or tourer bike that is over 500cc to be honest.

Can you hire one for the trip? I bet for a couple of hundred quid you could hire a bike for a holiday. Go and hire a VFR800 and enjoy the ride

But I still wouldn't do it meself without a van full of spares backing me up.

But theriouthly, you tried Oxford luggage? Don't use bungees to keep it on, unless you like everything wrapped up in your back wheel.

Or, tell your mate that you're picking the route and go via every twisty b road you can find on the map and have a break after every 50 miles.
Your mate will be the one who's knackered at the end of the day and you'll be smiling from ear to ear for a fortnight.

Face it, motards aren't tourers, it's against the motard law anyway. The only way you'll survive is to inject your arse cheeks with local anesthetic twice a day and then get a rub down by a blond Swedish massuse at the hotel.

Actually I've toured on a TZR 125 R (320 Km trip on 1 day), that basically is as confortable as a SM I reckon... It can be done... you just got to have the spirit! Couple of mates of mine done similiar trip on DTR and DT 50 LC. They where wheeling everywhere and only took B roads. Great fun they said!

It's good to have a nutter reputation you don't want people to think you are boring and predictable like me

Touring the south of France will be a few more than 320kms

It will be more like 3500kms at least, it's about 1500 kms from Nottingham to Marseille then the same back then the riding round while you are there. Even if he lives in Dover it's still gonna be a 3000 kms trip.

You could do it on a pushbike with razor blades glued to the seat but I think I would do it on a sportsbike or a sports tourer if it were me.

You would need another fortnight off work to recover

Tour round the south of France on a DT50 departing from the UK and you will need a year off work to recover There is dedication and there is madness.

Dunno about touring (real long distance) as i've only owned an SM for 6weeks but i did a 320mile (6hours around scottish highlands) trip on my SM610R two weeks ago and it was great fun! Ok, a little sore the next day but not bad at all.
Fuel was the only issue but i took a plastic pipe to rob my mates of some incase i ran out but i didn't happen.

Go on, be brave! :burnout:
