Ive just started doing Vortex ignitions.

got them on both my WR450 race bike and KTM 450SX race bike and once you start playing with them you will go mad just trying to eeek that last bit of power out, you need the software to do this and it aint cheap

however when you buy the unit it comes with 12 pre set maps on it and a switch on the bar to flick from best power to best traction, you then switch between which ever map you want on the best traction setting, the best power one stays set.

they are the bollocks from what testing i've done so far, found another 1bhp thoughout the range on the KTM when i loaded a map i'd written and from what my rider has told me the traction map worked really well to giving him good drive and griop with out the motor trying to spin the wheel up when on dirt sections.

so far so good is all i can say, and they are about £300 a unit i think, can check if ya like

Have you tried a flywheel weight?

When I first got my KX 500 I was doing a bit of offroad stuff on it but the tight trails were a pain in the arse cos I could never get enough traction and if I was traversing a grassy slope it either had too much power or not enough to keep it on the go and the bugger stalled.

I bought a 14 ounce flywheel weight from direct Steahly in the US for about 80 quid (exchange rate has got better for brits now I think) and the bike starts better and stalls less on tight stuff and when you open it up it's a bit more predictable with better traction.
I can't remember who it was but somebody on here has a flywheel weight for a CR that they might sell you.

If you don't like it then just unbolt it

Be aware that (in my KXs case anyway) if you have a fancy Boyeson aluminium ignition cover that it didn't fit inside it.

I had to put the standard Ignition cover back on

I must admit that programmable ignitions do sound like a cool bit of kit though

I will have the software and leads in January, and if it will load on a palmtop type thingy, will be able to bring along to meetings etc.

Am I the only one thinking that Progammable ignition + CR500 + Someone who isn't a mechanic = Seizure city?

Not dissing Trialuk but high performance strokers are gonna be VERY sensitive to ignition changes.

flywheel weight = Traction ! made a hooge diff to the WR, Like demo says cheap as well !

the key is to not assume that more advance is best, for e.g. on the 450 sx i loaded the std curve and ran the bike, then thought i want more power so i'll advance it another 4 degs, it lost power

i then retarded it 4 degs from the std curve and it made another 1 bhp everywhere, i then changed some other curves off of the tps that i rigged up and removed a big stutter the bike had on 50% throttle to 100% at about 4krpm.

imo without a dyno and a means to catalogue the changes having the software wont actually do much, cos while the bike may not feel faster if you've whacked up the advance you could be getting detonation which on a 2 smoke is gonnas kill it, it dont do many favours fo ra 4 stroke either

but6 having the flexibilty to change all this is a huge benifit, specially to someone like me, theres nothing worse that having something that you vcant change for the better or worse.

I'm still playing with this software and getting to grips with it but as i said i'm impressed so far and have had results all the time for better or worse, the best thing is that at Cadwell when it was shit weather i got the lap top out and just killed the top end power to provide therider with nore grip, unfortunatly it was too late by then and he was sliding everywhere

Wild guess. Am I right? Does the bread on your table come from twiddling spanners?

I do partake in some spanner twidling amung other things!!
As for all the questions, I don't know much about motarding, and this forum has been great so far for answering any queries.
