Hi guys,
Right... i'm looking for my first supermoto and have been doing a bit of research but am stuck on a choice between 2 particular bikes at the moment.

2000 reg DRZ400S 3800 miles, with usd forks, supermoto wheels with gold hubs, full Akro system etc etc etc £1500

or

2003 reg KTM LC4 640, 10000 miles, Standard spec £2000

Opinions please :burnout:

I haven't been on either as of yet. I will be having a ride of the DRZ tomorrow and possibly go to look at the KTM if i get a chance.

I have ridden a multitude of bikes and i suppose the closest to a supermoto i have riden would be a friends XT600X which i pretty much hated although i used to own a YZ125 and CR250 for motox when i was in my young teens.

As an adult i've been on a SV650, CBR600F Sport, CBR929RR, RSVR Mille, RSV Tuono and a Superduke and i'd have to say that i definately prefer the Twins over the IL4's.

My mind is saying go for the KTM but I'm also thinking the DRZ might be more bang per buck

ccm is better than the drz for the same price & 625 is better than the 640 imo dont narrow it to 2 bikes set a price & get the best for your bucks try riding a few models if you can ?

Which CCM?

I think he means the ktm, but that said I would take a ccm 404 over a 640 lcs or a drz400

IMHO go try a ccm 404 after youve tried the drz, its a better chassis, just with the E spec drz motor (more compression/lairier cams/better exhaust/fcr carb)

The 640 is a good intro but I think youll soon want something smaller, lighter and less vibey

I figured thats what you meant, but for someone completely uninitiated as to how crap normal ccms/ktm640s are it could be confusing

I very much doubt its gonna be back together in time
Besides which transport is a bit of a problem atm, will aim to get up there again at least once this summer - bike will be going much better though, will have tyres that can grip and a silly lairy cam

IMHO the 404 is the best ccm made to date (apart from the factory R30M), its a true all round bike, will do trackdays, greenlaning but is still a pretty good road workhorse

but can you get a good 404 for £1500? And if not, is it worth the extra money over the said DRZ?

You might get a cosmetically rough one for that, I would say 2k would get you a reasonable 04 one easily

Considering the advantadges over the drzs: -
48mm wp forks/wp pds shock, fcr carb, better flowing header pipes (where the restriction is on the stock drz exhaust), lumpier cams, increased compression and plastic tank.

By all accounts the sotck drz is gutless and NEEDS the fcr and exhaust minimum to get anything almos reasonable out of it.

Ok, so go for a 404 over the Drz but is the KTM640 worth going for over the 404?

Swings and roundabouts, the 404 is lighter and much much better if you intend to trackday or take it off road, it also doesnt vibrate like a very vibrating thing

The 640 has more grunt which can make road work easier, but its also physically much bigger and heavier.

Well realistically it's going to be a road bike but i wouldn't mind trying to get into a bit of off-road or maybe a trackday here or there. Primarily it will be on the road though.

I don't think the size will be an issue (i'm 14 stone and 6'3") hopefully the power drop (last bike was a 1000cc Twin) won't affect me too much.
