Is it not correct that the majority of air defence fighters in the battle of Britain were Hurricanes?I'm not trying to detract from the wonderful machine that was the Spitfire btw.

Yes, the spitfire was the superior aircraft but the hurricane had some very distinct advantages in that it was incredibly robust. Early versions where canvas, then alloy wings followed. They could return to base shot to bits and be repaired and back in the air within a couple of days or less. A real work horse of a machine. www.raf.mod.uk/bob1940/hurricane.html
The Hurrican was also a stable platform for mounting four 20mm Hispanos in to the wings. (After it was realised that eight 7.8mm Brownings couldn't 'knock the skin off a custard'). It didn't just shoot down Heinkels, it ripped them to pieces.:smoke:
