What the hell is going on

How come whenever I refresh the page I get a pop up for Yell.com on Builders?

First off, I don't need a builder and second, there's no such trade

I’m not allowed to have any of these as my avatar, so here they are on my sig instead. However, I now can't add any new ones

Did you ever hear anyone say “That picture had better be banned, because I might look at it and it might be very damaging to me”

R1 loon, if you're getting spurious pop ups on your PC (it IS a PC, not a Mac, right?), that may well be indicative of your PC having been infected with, or by Spyware or similar malware. You'll want to get rid of the buggers pretty quick before they possibly turn your PC into a Spambot Factory / Node.

Also, what is the status of your Anti-Virus software? You'll need to ensure that it's up to date. I'm assuming that you are using Windows XP.

Please "Google" and consequently download and install "Spybot Search and Destroy Version 1.6.2". Once it is installed, update the signatures via the internet, then run the immunization procedure, and after that, have it scan your PC. This may take a while, but it needs to be done. Spybot S & D will likely detect whatever malware's infected your PC and give you the option to eradicate it by clicking a fix it button.

If your Anti-Virus software's out of date, may I personally recommend "Avira Antivir", available from "www.avira.de". Install the Classic version, it's absolutely free and has regular updates via the net. Ignore invitations to purchase the premium version, these pop up on a splash screen everytime the software updates itself via the internet.

Hopefully the above suggested software (freeware) solutions will solve the incidence of any spurious pop ups you might be having.

Got the works on here to protect the laptop, plus Yarip to get rid of the annoying side bar adverts so I get a full screen of forum. It's just VD and their obsession with advertising and ramming it down your throat.

Time to do the usual and cancel any products I have that they are advertising. It doesn't half annoy companies when you tell them the reason you are cancelling is cos of their adverts. Shame that me cancelling my vodafone conract won't make much of a difference.

How odd....I don't have any pop ups while on the VD web site.

Maybe it's because i'm using the Opera 9.6 web browser. I avoid using the standard Windows Internet Explorer all together (except for Windows Updates). Too many vulnerabilities and exploits taking advantage of it.

When i'm not using Opera, I use Firefox. I wonder if that might make a difference?

Nope, I'm using Firefox, so that I can use yarip to block the other adverts.

I'm truly mystified then

What specific Anti-spyware solution are you using? You seem very knowledgeable about PC protection, so pardon my enquiring. I don't use Yarip myself, but then, I have my own set of tried, tested and proven utilities that I personally rely upon. I suspect that something on your Laptop is creating a virtual conduit, allowing those Pop ups to get through....

Ok then. I'e got Norton (not ideal, but works) scan weekly, Iobit Advanced System Care Pro (run manually every fortnight).

I use Firefox, as less intrusive than IE8

Yarip, purely for this site, due to the obsession with adverts.

I have no idea with computers and have gone for the sledgehammer approach to protection; that is, smash the fcuk out o fanyhting that looks even vaguely threatenng, but these pop-ups just piss me off.

At least someone else is suffering too.

This site is a fcuking disgrace with the amount of adverts

With all due respect, please junk Norton A.S.A.P.

Practically every client, whose PC or Laptop I've had the pleasure of removing Trojan Virus and Worm infestations from, has had this particular program as their point of entry. It is nowhere near as good as it looks, and worse still slows your PC right down. It has the dubious distinction of letting quite a few nasties through, while giving you the impression that it's doing a great job. There are truly FREE programs that beats the pants off it any day. I speak from personal experience, and believe me, when it comes to PC security, I am up there with Fox Mulder (and the Lone Gunmen) of the X-Files!!

For Anti-Virus Protection, you'd be better off with Avira AntiVir. Remove Norton and install this, configure it to delete ALL viruses it detects, then run it. You'd be surprised what it will find. This is the scenario in 95% + of all cases I deal with. Sorry, but Norton had its day ages ago, and is now "Charlie Romeo Alpha Papa". The irony is that you have to PAY for Norton. Sorry, but it's a rip-off.

For a World Beating Firewall with good protective capability against spyware bugs, please spend your money on ZoneAlarm Professional instead. It's NOT expensive, and it's worth every penny.

Add Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6.2 to the above suggested arsenal, and you are truly sorted methinks!

Search string bunged into yell is:

Everytime I come in here it seems something else has been fubared.

Problem I have with Spybot is it kept popping up every time anything was changed on the 'puter and there are loads of changes when you do updates etc. I tdrove me mad.

As others are suffering, my money is on it being another masterstroke of marketing by VD

Way to go to piss off every user and turn the forum into a full on ghost town.

R1Loon, I'm on firefox 3.5.2 and don't get the popups. Have you ticked the box in Options that blocks popups? Or have you allowed it by mistake?

I use Flashblock as well witch stops the ads down the right hand side.

AVG is a good free Antivirus for when your Norton runs out and Try PC Tools for a free firewall

R1 Loon, when installing Spybot, please disable the "Tea Timer" module, and you won't have that problem anymore. I agree that it is very annoying if you have the Tea Timer function enabled. However, I have Spybot running on over 500 PCs, so I can relatively vouch for it.

AVG is another good free AV program you might consider. I have specified Avira Antivir (German Software), as I have experience with this and know it produces very good results, with minimal overheads on your PCs CPU.

R1 loon, since the launch of the new Visordown, (which i do not like. Admin please go back 2 or 3 steps) i too get a pop up every time Visordown opens.

With the decline of the site though i will no long even bother popping in to look around

22/08/2009 at 17:35

Looks like something VD or who ever owns it now has caused through their website , doesn't happen on any of the other normal websites I visit  But then I haven't allowed popups by default on most other web sites I visit, guess VD will now be becoming a blocked site soon
