Me and my mate are planning a trip to the south of france this summer, more specifically the Ardeche region. it may be a bit bold, he's on a suzuki Virago 750, im on a little CBR125. Not everyone can have a GS. we plan to take 2/3 days to get down to the Ardeche, and were wondering if there any towns we should go via on the way down, or somewhere good we can pitch a tent. or any other recomendations anyone has?

No reason at all not to tour on a small bike, but to get to the Ardeche on a 125 in a couple of days (especially from Calais - Caen would be better) would be hard work. Your mate may well get fed up of waiting for you. In terms of route, just draw a straightish line on the map and follow the D roads (like smaller A roads but quieter). Most small towns and villages have municipal campsites which are generally cheap and a short stroll from the bars & restaurants. Take your time and enjoy it.

Go for it guys me and my mate went for the first time last june We did no planning just pre-booked the ferry and off we went for what turned out to be the best biking week we have ever had (HOPE to go again this year) I agree with the municipal camp sites that iansoady mentioned they are very well stocked for toilets & showers and Cheap. The TOLL roads can work out expensive we Followed the coast road from Calais to LE-Harve, HONFLUR is a great place to stop Loads of British Bikers there to chat and pick up afew pointers All the best for your trip Guys RIDE SAFE Denno

He wont be to bored keeping up. his bike is restricted to 33bhp. my cbr will do 80-85 comfortably, so speed wont be an issue

I rode to the Bol D'Or 24hr at Paul Ricard circuit in 1990 on an MZ (if you're not familiar it's an east german 2-stroke commuter bike) with a top speed of 80mph and a penchant for seizing frequently. Not only did I make it, but I stayed with my mates on 750+ sportsbikes, and overtook a load of VFR's on the ardeche gorge road!

So your CBR should walk it. Just make sure it is fit for the job before you head off; change the oil and filters if they haven't been done recently, check the tyres, brake pads, coolant, etc. If they're all okay you're good to go.

Have you considered staying at a motel while en route? Formule1 hotels are cheap as chips - they start at 30 euros a night per room - not per person - and each room sleeps up to four people. I know you've mentioned camping, but with 2-3 days riding on the cards, getting a good night's sleep will make the journey much more enjoyable. Reims and Moulins seem about the right distances.

Get a cheap satnav if you haven't already got one (they start at £50 in tesco) and rig it to your bike using a cigar lighter socket from halfords. Then you can disable toll roads and motorways without spending days plotting routes.

Whatever, get the bikes packed and get going, you will absolutely love it!

Oh, and when you get there, find your way to the D290 heading south-east from Vallon Pont D'Arc...and start screaming!

If you like vino, check out Beaune and surrounding area.

A taster of some of the roads down there...

If you just go the straight-down route, you're going to have a lot of very very flat territory on the main roads down Champagne way. Personally if I were 'doing' France again I'd head over to the Belgian then German border and take in Metz and Strasbourg areas. Scenery is less 'pretty' but a bit more stunning IMO.

Any which way, enjoy the trip.

You've got to go to Millau to take a pic of your bike under the viaduct, if only to prove to your mates you made it!

For a great example of Xtreme touring on a 125, check out this book: Old Man on a Bike

France offers some awesome riding roads. A long time ago, I took my Cagiva Mito 125 (restricted) down to Cannes with a couple of mates. It took for ages, but was one of the most memorable rides ever. On the way back we ended up taking the Autoroute to make up time.

Enjoy the trip!

Did not make any posts here before, as the Ardeche is not really a region I have been to, so really did not have anything to 'contribute' to your trip.

However, have been watching this thread and sorry to hear that your trip is off this year, hope you are OK yourself.

You are right not to give up on the idea though. Go next year for sure.

Plenty of great places to see in France and good roads to ride. Hope things all get sorted out for you.

Regards, EW.
