Her in doors is not to good on long journeys due to back problems, is it possible to ride to Dover or the like, put us, and the bike on a train to nice, have a ride round for a week, and return the same way????

what do you think?

Yes, this is possible, but it is VERY, VERY expensive - you have been warned!!

Here are some websites that will help you though, should you decide to go for it:

DB Autozug - Motorail Information

France Motorail (Raileurope)

Have you considerd getting your Lady to fly down to the South of France (there are some VERY cheap flights like Ryanair & Easyjet etc) You RIDE down and back, and join up with her in the south?? - you might find this is much cheaper than the train, and will give YOU a chance to have some solo 'blats'!!

ALSO if you perhaps stay in ONE place, (or perhaps limit to TWO different places) and book a hotel with jacuzzi or pool, for example, then ride out each day, that would give her a chance to relax her back & recover during the evenings.

This might not be as much touring as you want to do, but could be a good compromise for both of you, under the circumstances!!

As regards the cost of the motor rail, you have to balance that against the cost of motorway tolls which I believe are also a bit pricey.

Why don't you ride down and have the good lady fly down with Rynair or whoever?

Oops, just seen EW has made the very same suggestion - two mentions in four posts must make it worth considering.

Many thanks for the advice and ideas, I have seen on another thread they are taking about container transport, but i would assume this is for long distance such as ozzy or USA.

If I go for the solo blast to 'Nice' what sort on time would you think, from Calais? I would not want here enjoying herself without me, I no about the French!

IF you get an early ferry across, I reckon you could do it reasonably comfortably in 2 days, even using N1 roads rather than Autoroutes.

Viamichelin

Gives a distance of approx 800miles and approx 11 hours to do it all in one hit if you use predominantly autoroutes.  So it CAN be done, in a day, but I don't think that would be very enjoyable - your back would probably need time to recover, then!!

Calais > Nice is about 1300km .  One to one and half days with autoroutes, two to three with N roads.

Last visit to F found that many N roads which have now been "replaced" with autoroutes have had blinky slow-you-down-roundabouts incorporated in them at a lot of towns.
