BMW K1200S - poor review!

New to this site, having only picked up the magazine a few times, but what a dull review.

I've ridden one of these myself (for a brief morning) around Hants & Sussex and would've given my left bollock for a blast around Germany & Austria. I found the bike thoroughly competent & extremely quick, albeit a big long heavy machine - surely there's something more to tell us here ?

One of the finest bikes I've ever owned.  Can go short or far, comfortably.  Longish wheelbase but for 99.9% of roads/curves it doesn't matter.  FWIW, Motorrad gave it the highest score ever, any make, any model, replacing the previous recordholder the VFR.  Here in the States Motorcycle Consumer News gave it the rare five stars.  There are some fine reviews out there, but if the magazine bias is towards race replicas, then as you note, the review can be dull and ho-hum.

I also find that biking journo's only seem to find good in full on race replicas or looney street bikes. I think they are scared to compliment how bloody good a bike the K1200S is because they think it would affect their street cred in the market place. I suppose it is true to say that TWO seem to be recognising the BMW brand more in recent editions, so maybe we will see some more open minded reviews in the future and not simply a write off for a machine that doesn't leave a black line on the tarmac when you open the throttle, I mean, what kind of measure of performance is that?

the review seems to be rather old and may have been at the press launch.  there have been up grades to the software since then and the engine is much better.

I agree what a foolish review; how the ability to leave a black trail of rubber is any sort of test is beyond me.

other aspects of the review are quite complementary such as the handling.

No personal experience but the write ups I have read on the S and the R have all been fantastico. I can see the Trip going on an R in the future.

I've got one - had it since May 2007.  Use it every day all year round.  Find it a great bike with good power delivery, good comfortable riding position and great reliability.

You didn't have a vfr 750 before it by any chance?

Had a BMW R1100S and liked that.  Had it in for service and took the K1200S as courtesy bike.  Loved it and ordered one on the spot.

Never thought I would ride a big sports bike but this one is different.  It's also the first bike that I have not even given thought to what bike I would have next as I am so happy with it, even after 2 years.
