Will fuel economy have any bearing on your next bike purchase?

Me? Yes, very much so, still considering a diesel Enfield modded to run on bio. I can't see much changing with the fuel supply situation in the future so I'm preparing to reign things in a bit.

Sadly yes. I am looking at a NTV650 as they give around 60mpg... Better than the 37mpg I get out of my VFR...

Not at all. Even my old R1 was economical compared to most cars. Can't see many other viable options to a 600-1000 bike for what I want from it.

I suspect one or two couriers may consider the 125 option over another 500 for work in town but that's about it.

fortunately i live 3 eyewateringly fast country road miles away from my work place, I leave my estate and on the right i have the town and the left i have the country 25feet appart.

As a result i have never factored economy into any automotive purchase. For me its all about getting as much power as i can afford to be insured under 6 mile round trip to work and back hardly makes a dent, Still, i managed to drink a tank of fuel in 5 days if its dry as the bike spends most of its time high in the rev range there and back

It's nice to get 48mpg.

Doing 15,000 miles per year if my bike did 35mpg that would cost me another £500 a year

To right, another push iron for me, cheap as chips to run and keep fit (ish) in the process. 50mpg from my cbr6, happy with that aswell.

Blimey - 30 miles out of a tank!! (I know, you go other places as well.....).

For me, range is important, not ecomony alone. my VTR struggles to do 100 miles from a tank
I'd rather have a giant tank on a thirsty bike than have to choose my bike on its MPG.
Until recently my round trip to work was 150 miles. the Diesel car would do 50mpg on that trip, the VTR around 35mpg.....

I consider MPG and tank range.

Whilst in hunts the other day I was looking at the varaderos. I noticed the 125 version which was pretty big for a 125.


The high mpg would be pretty good but I reckon I'd get frustrated at the low speed.

I've been wondering if there's any point in ever buying another bike at all - petrol's getting a bit expensive to be used in a weekend toy, and I need the practicality of a car too often to consider having a motorbike as my sole form of transport.

Sadly yes... will probably be leaving the big sports bikes alone and go for a middleweight motard or something.

I won't be buying an RG500. 9 miles to the gallon is a bit expensive.

Most bikes do more miles per gallon than my MPV deisel van, So I'll just stick to using any bike I can afford though most of the year.

Well there seem to be several POV's here, one is the commuter (me) another is the Weekend Warrior, and the other being 50/50 biker/driver people who can ride or drive to work. I can only ride in because of parking and the Congestion Charge. TBH economy isn't a huge factor right now because of the short distance to work, but if I were to live say, 35 miles away, then it certainly would add up. An Enfield with a 600 mile tank range would make sense but knowing the buffoons in charge of this place, they'd be banned because of emissions or something even though the per mile output would be lower than a Euro IV vehicle. There's a reason why diesel bikes aren't on the market, not sure what it is, but there's a reason.
