Straight up.

Was sat outisde the boozer this evening watching the eights, sculls & canoes go by & thinking.....

a) used to love canoeing when I was a kid
b) I live 50yds from a river with access to much of the navigable waterways system
c) Fancy some of that again, I do.......

....so anyone know where I can buy a decent S/H Kayak? Preferably a 2person job, so I can take either someone else, or a bit of luggage, for a weekend?

Haven't been in the scene for years so have no idea where to start......

Dodge mate,
Try one of the local clubs. I haven't competed for years & only remember my localist clubs.
Vikings in Bedford, operate from the same place as the star rowing club - by the outdoor market.
Baldock club @ north herts leisure centre on sunday nights.
Or try tipping up to one of the local events
i.e. Sunday Slalom @ the top of the A428 @ Northampton.

Ask anybody in the club for the club supplyer - they mostly use one guy who does it on a non/low profit basis.

Alternatively: I still have one of my boats & some kit too...

in my Dad's garage roof. One's a KW7 but they're all glassfibre, about 25 years old.

Last time I looked at canoes (Dancer Pirouette) glass was out, roto-moulded Polyproplene was in.

Don't forget advanced training!

Oh god, the summer's finally here, born again canoists

Bloody dangerous those kyaks, returnees ought not to be allowed to buy them without some advanced training first, they're light and fast and will have you upside down in no time flat. Best you start off with a nice little punt, get an advanced instructor on your pole and have him teach you a few things about upstream skulling while you suck on his cornetto.

'ere Dodgy, I've got one in my pocket if you're interested.

Seriously though, like Adders says, the clubs are the best way to go. I haven't done any canoeing for 10 years so I'm a bit out of touch and don't have any contacts any more I'm afraid.

What kind of canoeing are you planning on, white water or trekking? Oh hang on, you said Cambridge - that won't be white water then, will it.

Quite superb sir.

Nah, I'm crap at punting anyway - reckon it'll be far easier in a more powerful craft

I used to do a lot but have been out of it for ages. Just quite fancy the idea of paddling up stream to a few pubs and pissing off some rowers on the way

Did witness a rather nasty crash last night - some little jolly boat piloted by two pissed crusties got hit a glancing blow by a rowing eight at full tilt, as they popped out from behind a tree. Bit of damage and some very lucky folk.

Eights can get up quite a lick!

Born again Canoeists???

Whatever next.....

I used to row in an 8 at school, dunno what speeds they go - but it's fecking fast if you hit anything!!!

LOL - one of the coaches commented that it was impossible to capsize an 8 - his crew promptly proved him wrong... ROFLMAO!!!!
