What's a good backup career?

....for someone who has bugger all qualifications, no experience in anything other than contract security and internal post room activities and managed to land a decent job solely on the basis of his attitude and approach. They are happy where they are but would be in serious doo-doo if anything untoward happened due to lack of any real marketable skills. They are good with people and allergic to numbers.

I'll pass on any comments

Class 1 HGV driver. It's nice to know you could get sacked today and be working again by teatime for any number of driving agencies who usually pay more

The plumber option's not a bad one. I heard on the radio yesterday of a fast track course to join one of the country's largest franchises: I think it was a 14 week intensive course - downside is it costs around 9k but having 'qualified' you could be making 50k, and what's more... it could be your ticket to the rest of the world: there's a world shortage of plumbers, apparently... 20,000 short in the UK alone.

Or you could become a police driving instructor.

The Fast Track courses are no replacement for a "proper" apprenticeship or training to be honest.

Unfortunately not all plumbers earn £50k a year and it depends on where you live.

But yes there is a chronic shortage of any skilled labour be in, Plumbers, Carpenters, Builders, Mechanics etc etc So the choice is yours.

It really depends on what sort of money you want to earn whilst learning another trade or whilst training

I was going to train to be a plumber but theres long waiting lists at all the collages in my area, so i'm gonna go for HGV driving instead. Apparently theres going to be a shortage of lorry drivers over the next few years so wages will go up and there'll be loads of work.
I saw the plumbing franchise thing too Plumfast if you've got £24000 to invest, might be worth looking into.

Why does everyone assume they can fast track any trade that normally takes a 4 year apprenticeship ?

All the company owners I know and me included will not touch these 'boil in the bag' tradesmen. Don't tell you that on the course do they, the reason there is a shortage is because no one can be arsed with the apprenticeships anymore

But I would recommend appliance testing, boring as hell but a one day course and a £900 tester gets you out there, £200 a day is common doing that

I have enough bikes thanks

Bing!

Now THAT makes sense. So that's PAT testing right? Do you get a long term certificate or does it need renewing every year?
