Upgrade of mobile phone...

I'm somewhat disappointed and bemused at present (what's new?).

I'm an Orange mobile customer, and have been a contract customer with them for 4 years, and with them as PAYG 3 years prior to this.

My contract is up in November, but as I've just passed my 10-month phase, I thought I'd enquire into a new handset, as my K750i suffers from the crappy Sony Ericsson joystick.

Rang up, and said I was interested in the Samsung D900.
Was told there was a £99.99 charge if I upgraded to this!
Pointed out my phone was knackered, but didn't want to use my Orange insurance.
Asked if taking my contract up to 18 months would bring it down.
Still no budge.

Then pointed out, that a new customer would get the phone for free, on a cheaper contract than I currently have with them.
Still no budge - apparently NEW customers get better deals on phones!

They weren't even bothered when I enquired about the disconnection fee.

Now, as I said, I've been a customer for some years now.
I've always had good dealings with them in the past, and got my K750i for free, when it should've been £50 IIRC.

It may sound greedy on my part, but to me, Orange just seem to be trying to bulk up on the number of customers now, instead of looking after the current ones.

Seriously considering a move to Vodafone now....

So you got a D900 from Orange for £4.99?

I rang to cancel, and the guy didn't even seem bothered that I wanted to cancel!
This time last year, I mentioned the possiblity of leaving, and they were all over me like a cheap suit!

This is of no help to you whatsoever, I just like to gloat whenever I can.

I am currently on an old O2 staff tariff, £10 per month and thats it, no additional charges at all regardless of volume of calls or sms messages (as long as they are not international)

Best thing is, I havent worked for O2 in over ten years

That sounds very strange, from my own experiences, I know their customer services are struggling with the amount of new customers, very strange practice to not try and keep the exisitng ones though.

Can I just ask whether you got through to a UK call centre? I had a few problems recently with various bits and pieces, kept getting through to the Indian Call centres and didnt have much luck. Eventually got through to a UK call centre, upgraded phone to a 'new customers only deal' got a load of free texts and stuff thrown in extra and was able to upgrade my Wanadoo account to a freebie.

WUSS#1169, pipe 'n' slippers officionado. 'L'Homme Bleu qui marche plus vite', yes and keep it that way. This is also still dull

VFRs are nice, a bit like me, nice but dull :smoke:

Def a UK call centre.
Currently on a 200mins/ 100 text contract @ £30 a month, which I believe is more than the new contracts anyway.
Wouldn't budge on the price for the D900, as they reckoned OFCOM had restricted how the network subsidise the charges on upgrades compared to new customer phones, or summit?
Load of bull to me...

Sounds a load of shite to me, tell 'em to get fucked. Got mine upgraded with 'em less than a month ago. Nokia 6233 somethingorother with a memory card, plays music, fairly decent (for a mobby) camera. Pay £30 per month 300 free mins, plus load more for phoning orange, about 1000 free texts (which is funny as fuck as the most I send a month is about 20), plus the free internet package - fast speed, 8 whatever they are mb thingies, and as much downloading I'm ever likely to need unless I end up on a total porn download rush. Oh yeah and free phone calls on my landline in the evenings.

Ermm, none of that is making you feel better is it?

Phone them up and ask for your migration code as you wish to move your number to an alternative provider, customer retentions will offer you want you want to retain your business.

You may have to wait until your current 12 months is up though

No, I've looked elsewhere.
However, at present, I'll have a £45.95 disconnection fee to pay, but if they can;t be arsed to keep my business, then I can get the contract cheaper on Vodafone.

Wouldn't go to another network because of coverage...

Whatever you do Gnome, DO NOT open a link to the Carphonewhorehouse, if you think Orange are bad at customer service, think ten times worse and to your face.

Also, don't do phones4u. At the end of your contract (and indeed throughout it) you will be constantly harassed by people who couldn't possibly have got your number from anywhere else, like my dad, who uses his phone for work and doesnt know how to use the internet, so could never have given his number out that way. Bastards, I consider that an absolute breech of confidentiality. I won't let him go back with them, even if he wants to now, on principal.

I got a decent deal on vodafone over the internet. Getting towards renewal time now (End of November) so I guess I have to wait and see if they will sort me out with that skinny samsung. Can't thinkof the number, but I know it looks ace in the advert. Such a sucker for advertising, last phones 2 phones have been the ones with the best ad campaigns.

Guess its just luck of the draw, I phoned up to try the old disconnect trick with orange and it worked for me, got their dolphin unlimited tariff (magic number plus 600 anytime anyone mins and unlimited texts) for £30 instead of £35 and free d900

My wife was an Orange customer for 8 years, same sort of stupid hassle.

She is now a happy Vodaphone customer with 750 min/100 texts and a new Nokia N73 for £35 a month for the next 18 months (her Orange bills were heading into the £80/month levels.....!)

What surprised me was the lack of interest they had in keeping her as a customer. How long until we hear about customer retention rather than new sign ups as the indicator of company profitability?

Didn't Orange make a fuss about the same contracts for existing as well as new customers? Or was that another operator.

bored of the jumping man.

Glad; in a way, to hear I'm not the only one who has had a problem with them then.
I've only got 6 weeks left on my contract, but even after sleeping on it, I'm still considering moving away.
I'll try the same tactic again tonight, and see what happens.
If I don't get anywhere, I'll request to cancel my contract, and get my PAC code for my number.

Correct - Apparently, new customers get the same deals as upgrade customers...
Why can't I get a D900 free then?!?!?
