I had this idea about riding touring the states. ive seen lots of organised tours advertised on the net but I fancies just going it on my tod. i wanted to rent a bike (probably not a Harley) and toddle off on my own.. i was wondering if any 1 has done this or has any advice on doing so..

I have never actually done a formal tour, but I have toured a bit. Depending on how much time you would like to spend, I would recommend California. They have the best weather and a variety of scenery. Northern CA and Southern CA are like two different countries.

ZRX61 knows more about the left coast than I do.

Toured Cali from LA to Las Vagas in 8 days doing all the usual stuff ... and on a Harley. The suit American roads totally. You will get pissed off and fined for speeding on anything else. I hated it so much the first day I was on the verge of chucking it in, but mid day, day two, it all fell into place. Book yourself a Road King... the heritage range are truly shit.

It was in an organsied group, everyone gelled together, and to be honest , it was one of the best holidays I've been on .....

I booked via a company called HJ Travel. The always advertise in the back of the various mags. I've tried to google it, but the correct one didn't come up.

They were very good, and everything went as planned. I just had to book flights.

The company in the US is called Eaglerider (they may just be resposible for the bike rental).

The format was what they called Route 66 and the Wild West tour. Basically, Joshua Tree NAtional Park, Mojave Desert, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion National Park and then Las Vagas.

The tour was guided by a 60 years old cool due, who looked like an Easy Rider reject. He was fun, and not above a bit of severe unkindness to the Hogs. (we had a bit of a racette on the ay out of Bryce, but had to give up after grounding the fopotboards to much). The luggage follows in a support vehicle.

I only did 8 days , but the tour carried in thro Death Valley, Yosemite, San Fran, and then the Pacific Coast Highway.

It wasn't cheap but v good.

HJ also offer trips down the Baja penninsula, BMW hire, Chile etc. Look then up.

Which explains why it took EIGHT days to travel 250 miles....

If I wanted to make a life-long career out of working with the mentally retarded I would have gone into Special Education or opened a Harley Davidson dealership

A few years ago, BIKE magazine had a series of excerpts from a book a bloke wrote, about his solo tour of all the States.

Can't remember the guys name, but he did it on a ZZR 1100, and got chased by a gang on Harleys (who couldn't catch him, by the way ).

Contact BIKE and see if they can help you. :burp:

If I ever get my knee down it will probably mean that the attached arse has followed it.
