The new FZ1 Fazer thing

After having read a few comments by Kevin Ash on this bike I'm a little colder on buying it as a replacement option for my FJR. Terrible handling, stuttering fuel injection ... ?
I'm not sure I trust his opinion, being a MCN nobhead of some vintage. Anyone have any idea if these are as bad as he says ?

I rode Bobby's and I didn't like it. More snatch than a whore house.

the handling is a bit strange at first, and there is a guy in the states that does the, fueling i think it the same bloke who deos the retard elimanators

I like the style of the bike. However, engine's a "screamer". Although you can get a fix for the snatchy fuelling. It was in MCN a few weeks ago, so it must be true Cost about £250, IIRC.

Not heard any adverse comment about the handling......

I didn't think the handling would be that bad given its components; just wondered what the problem is exactly with the fuelling and what 'fixes' it ? Anyone ?

It doesn't look faster bthan the FJR on paper, though ? Virtually same 0-200kmh and top speed.

I like my Fz1 . I can understand why some may not like the feuling but tbh I don't have a problem with it. I'm really happy with the handling and the riding position is about the best I've tryed.

The only real down side is the tank range that is about 110 milkes to reserve! Ive not had a problem in 4700 miles and can't think what bike I'd replace it with.

Worth a test ride to see if you like it I reckon .

Go on the MCN website and use the search facility? The original article might be there (as I think someone else said, it was a fix from the US, IIRC).....

The "problem" is, as I understand it, a flatspot at low revs as you get on the gas, followed by you leaving earth's atmosphere as the fuelling kicks in

Bobby, however, doesn't seem to have a problem with it........

eeek. 110 miles ?? See, this is my problem. I posted a while back asking advice on a more suitable bike for my wobbly pins ( www.visordown.com/forums/showthread.php?t=296869 ).

Trouble is I'm not getting any closer to the ideal. Every bike seems to have an achilles heel of some sort. If I had to commute in and around the city itself then I'm certian to get one of these :
www.mc.honda-eu.com/uk/en/mc/scooter/sh300i/introduction/introduction.jsp Bit gay I know but 0-60 in 7 seconds and 95 top speed with 16" wheels and ABS for £3500.

But I'm still, for the forseeable, chunking up and down the M4 3 days a week in all weathers. I only have to turn the FJR around in a 8 metre wide parking area once on the return journey. The M4 to work is the only use I have for the bike - no touring, bollocking about etc.

So far I've looked at :

Honda Silver Wing ABS - nice weight, braking, comfort, carrying capacity and feel but concerned about handling at higher speed and buffeting. Zanx mentioned the width over your legs but the Wing has neat cutouts where your leg goes straight down to the floor.
Yamaha FZ1 Fazer ABS - funny fuelling and low tank range, plus don't really like the idea of keeping all that exposed stuff clean. I would have a chain bike if everything else was perfect.
BMW K1200S/R1200ST etc - nearest BMW dealer in Reading just shut down and from what I hear they need their time in the workshop.
VFR800 - for the weight and complexity they seem to have forgotten to fit an engine.
Any moto/trailie/cross is just too tall for me, I cannot hold a bike on anything other than complete flat foot ( 6'1" ).

Ideally I would have low CofG and reasonable weight, shaft drive, ABS, all over fairing for easy cleaning and weather protection, good power, 160+ to reserve and reliability.
The K1200s comes closest but after test riding it and suffering the rubbish gearbox and hearing the horror stories of repair bills ...

From what I've seen keeping the FJR has a lot going for it, just have to be careful with the balance. I might consider fitting hefty fall-over guards, for the exhaust as well, and a thumb brake of some sort.

I've got an FZ-1, and it's true that they have jerky fuelling when going from a fully closed throttle to open throttle. I'm currently riding around it by using a dab of rear brake, a bit more finesse on the throttle and making sure that all the slack is out of the throttle cable.

Ivans Performance Products is the company that does a splice in gadget, and from the comments on the fz1oa owners board it seems to do the trick on smoothing the fuelling out.

I've not noticed any handling problems with mine, and the flat bars and more upright riding position make it alot easier than other larger bikes to handle and manouvre in town / car parks, etc.

I've managed about 145 to 150 miles out of a tank which I made a special effort to brim. Compared to Bobby's mileage this means either a: Bobby is not pulling the fuel hose right to the lip of the tank and missing out on a few millilitres of fuel or b: I'm riding like a wuss! (more likely)

To be honest, if I was doing a shed load of motorway miles I'm not sure I'd pick a part faired bike. You can get a touring screen and fairing as an add on for the Fazer, but by the time you've spent money on those accessories you might have been better looking at other bikes...

I had one as a loaner while mine was in. Very disappointed in power delivery. First gear felt like a mild mannered 600, 2nd not much better. Once above 3rd gear and the ignition-retard had dropped off it was fine.

I was expecting it to be like the R1 engine, but with more midrange. Seemed to have less!

The retard eliminator box thingy is a must

Get the first Fazer 1,000 There are still a few about brand new in Dealers.

Mind, I'm biased.

From what you've said, not really sure why you want to move on from the FJR though?

Might also be worth looking at the CB1000F thingy that Honda have put into the 'Fazer type' slot.

TBH I've not ran the bike out of petrol so once on reserve ( 110/ 116 miles) I get to a garage pretty pronto! I really must strap a container of petrol to the back and see how far I can get before I run out .

What sort of distance are you getting to reserve?

I've not run it all the way through reserve yet, but I must have been on vapour when I did 145. I was riding it pretty gently that day though, maybe slightly over the national limit (allegedly ) on the NSL roads with the odd blast for an overtake.

110 sounds about right if you've been giving it some handle

I have ridden one as well and must be weird as I really liked the handling. I agree about the snatchly throttle but apparently a couple, very few mind are ok.

I rode Bradford Motorcycle's demo and really enjoyed it except for the engine being a bit flat below 6000rpm - not what I'd expect from a one litre engine....

The riding position and handling were great

BTW the K1200S gearbox improves with mileage, but it's still not quite as good as a Japanese bike. Apart from that it's a great bike and cheap to service

Tyres don't last long though.
