Has anyone else test ridden one?

I'm worried about whether I need to take pipe & slippers along or if they'll be provided.

V-tec or earlier?

From what I've heard, take an alarm clock!

VTEC 800 ABS - it'll be a new one

Are you joining IAM before or after you buy it?

I was given one for a couple of weeks as a replacement bike after an accident. I found it a little twichy at first, specialy at slower speeds, and the dual brake got a bit of getting used to. But when you go over 7000 revs, it makes a lovely noise and feels good!

Have fun and let us know!

I think the 800 is a lovely neutral handling, easy to ride bike with typical Honda finish.

The V-tec cutting in and out at 7k is very annoying. In top gear at 60mph there is no grunt for overtaking safely. It's down two, maybe three gears.

I found I was revving the nuts off it everywhere,it doesn't feel like an 800.

So,a good bike let down big time by a disappointing engine.

If I wanted a viffer I'd buy an earlier one.

A guy I knew had a 2003 one for a year or more. He said he prefered the pre Vtec one he used to have. I cant remember what it was he didn't like about the vtec, but something put him off. he still kept the bike for ages though. He is back on a sportsbike now, but has had BMW GS etc. He still reckons the VFR is the best all round bike out there.

I was going to ask if you could cope with the step up from your own bike power wise, then i saw it was a VFR you were taking out

I wear Orange overalls and pick up crashed loons from the track at weekends :smoke:

Yeah I figure I should give it a try. The CBR's at the stage where it makes financial sense to sell on and replace it. I plan to have the Armstrong up and running in the next few months so it'll be used for commuting.

Without the need for a commuter it makes sense to have something slightly more compfy for the open road, a blackbird or busa is probably a bit too big so I'm curious about the VFR. If I don't get on with it I'm going to be really dull and just get another (newer but still 2nd hand) CBR. Half tempted to get something highly impractical and more sporty but I don't have a car and don't fancy long distances in the foetal position.

Methinks you'll like it.

Don't worry about the pipe and slippers, you'll have plenty of time to get them before you pick the bike up.

Watch for the v-tec kicking in mid-corner if it's a bit slippy, oh, and the brakes are shit.

I'm pretty set on having a full fairing.

Very tempted by the MT03 but it'd be more of a town bike than a long distancer. Maybe some time in the future

the vtec is a cracking bike , even better when you get some cans on it.

There has been a lot of discussion concerning the v-tec. I do know the annoying step at 7k is more pronounced on some while others have a smoother transition.
I did hear talk of switching cam sensors giving satisfaction.

I rode my mates to Phillip MaCallen's for a service,on the way it was almost impossible to hold a steady speed in top @ 7k,it was like a two stroke dropping in and out of the power band.
On the way home after the service the bike was much smoother,so I dare say setup makes a difference.

Oh,and it grounds on the pipes on the right, but don't tell my mate..

Test rode on of the V-Tec models last year - sounded and felt rough when the V-Tec kicked in.

It was far from Honda smooth.

I did not like.

The VFR 800 was the best engineered bike I have ever had, with an awsome engine in the pre VTEC form. There are faster bikes out there, buit how often do you want to do more than 150? Realistically?

From what I have read, the VTEC is simply something that Honda did "because they could". It doesnt add any more power at the top end, and takes it away from the bottom end. Its not even a proper variable valve set up like you have in some cars. Its either full on 4 valves or 2 with no in between. Habvve a look at this month's Bike magazine where they run a comparison.

bike magazine managed to compare the old with the new... but forgot to mention the old vfr in the test had a race can on...the vtec hd the standard , in a more equal test the new would have come out better...
