Taking your bike test in Cyprus

Prior to leaving Cyprus in 2002 I thought I'd take advantage of the rather relaxed motorcycle tests.

The test takes the form of two parts:

The Practical

1. Slalom through 8 traffic cones
2. Ride in between two lines that that form an ever decreasing circle, get to the centre, turn around and ride back out.
3. Ride out of the test centre (using hand signals) turn left (now out of sight of the examiner who is smoking his fags) turn around and ride back to the examiner.
4. The emergency stop (on gavel) apparently the longer the skid the better :burnout:

Time 4 minutes

Hang around for 5 minutes waiting for an examination room

The Theory

1. Answer 10 highway code questions (get 2 wrong) Costas explains the mistakes I've made and hands me my Cypriot bike licence.

Total time taken: 11 minutes
Total cost: £150 for short notice test and 3 days bike hire

On returning to the UK I promptly exchange said licence for full UK licence

I also heard stories that it used to cost a bottle of Whiskey
That's probably going back 20 years though.

A piece of advice, if you don't mind.

Take some more training over here.

If I ever get my knee down it will probably mean that the attached arse has followed it.

i got my car test done when i was out there with the raf. They are getting harder the car test but the bike test is still piss easy. mind anyone who has driven with me will tell you the car test was too easy! also meens for the first year in my car i can`t get points on my lience and if i get pulled on my bike i show them the cypriot leience and they soon loose interest.

When the Americans went into space they found that their pens would not work in 0G so they spent millions making a pen that would work. When the cold war ended they asked the Russians how they solved the problem, they used a pencil.

Snap, I did the same, except in 91 there were no cones just ride around the block and come back.

I appreciate the comments posted.

However, in mitigation, I had been riding for 10 years prior to taking this mickey mouse test, the majority of which was in Cyprus where the standard of driving is far worse than in the UK.

My wife is doing her DAS at the moment and due to take her test in two weeks, all of her riding and training is aimed at passing the test, if she passes she will only have had 6 weeks riding experience and can in theory ride any bike she likes.

Tank Regiment Officers in the main. Very little concept of pain and therefore no descernable judgement when it comes to other vehicles and the damage they can do to a body rather that 64 tonnes of CR1

Nuff said

I took this test and have since rode within my limits and that of the bike.

I don't filter through traffic on the M4 at 90, I ride 130 miles a day (round trip) at present commuting to work and have not yet had the need to post a "Rider Down" thread.

I agree that I would have benefited from additional "lessons" initially but with 40k miles under the belt in 2 1/2 years I feel that little would be gained from additional training.

I could be wrong though.

Having ridden with you a few times I agree that you're not as scary as I expected (or come off as often as I thought ) but I'd still go for extra training.

I'm working up to the IAM test at the moment & have to say it's worth it. It's when you think you don't need training that mistakes are made.

Tell your missus good luck on her test from me & let me know how she gets on.
