Son's F650 has gone bang. So probably going to rebuild engine.
Anyone know of a Rotax specialist for advice, hand holding etc.?

Peter Knight or Michael Knight or whatever his name is, is bloody useless.

Try Andover Norton, or give the guys at motorworks a call www.motorworks.co.uk they're very helpful. My experience of them is that they have vast knowledge of the F650 and can diagnose problems on the phone.

alternatively if the blow up means it's time for tuning, try www.team-pami.com/ - they're the chaps that did the engine for Ricard Sainct's Dakar winning F650 apparently...

There used to be a business called Sportax,I used to deal with them a few years ago when I ran a Harris Matchless G80,(500 Rotax). They where pretty good,I don't know if they are still in business? I will go & see if I can find the phone number.

Steve.

Not trying to put the new Sportax folk down, but the legend behind that name sold the firm as a going concern and buggered orf to France.

The phone codes for Southampton changed years ago - it'll be 02380 366406 now.

Although their website says it's 02380 366405..... www.bsa-regal.co.uk/NP/

Nevermind, 'twas one of those "handy numbers to keep in your address book should a random stranger need advice". It has now been scribbled over

See my post above.

I wouldn't trust him with my engine. The man is rude, unco-operative, surly and dis-interested.

My cousin has a CCM 640 (with Rotax motor) and completely independantly of my experience found exactly the same.

Hmm. Phoned Andover Norton, and indeed they are Rotax specialists but sadly don't do anything for the BMW motor. So I'll keep looking.

Again, see my post above. www.motorworks.co.uk will help you out - you can even buy s/hand short or full engines from them with a 6 month warranty

There's a guy calling himself "F650_Mal" who posts on the forums at www.f650.co.uk who specialised in 2nd hand parts for (mainly carburetted) F650s...

Tried both Motobins and Motorworks. Neither have any used engines. Rare as rocking hose poo - but see below F650_Mal. I've pretty well made my mind up to rebuild it. It would seem that the only damage is to the balancer shaft bearing. Otherwise all OK. But it's a complete strip to get the bearing out.
Whilst I was at it it I thought it would be a good idea to do a complete rebuild, main bearings, big ends, valves, springs etc etc. However it seems that the crankshaft is not rebuidable. It's got plain bearing not rollers and you just chuck it away and get a new crank/con rod assembly from BMW, who charge £395 = VAT for the privilege.

So if I go the strip down route and the big ends show any sign of wear it's scrap Surely someone can rebuild these things. BTW Aprilia Pagaso motors ARE roller bearing big ends - fit a crank from one of these?

Spoke to him today. Very helpful fellow. He has a motor for me but I don't really want to buy it unless I have to. See above.

Really don't know what to do for the best.
