Riding on Auto Pilot?

Realised on my 'drive' home after work yesterday that i had driven about 8 miles to the M40 without remembering any of the route id just taken as if id been day dreaming for the pass 20 mins or so. Which then alarmed me cause i would obviously not have been keeping a careful eye out for our biking fraternity!!

Quite a common trate among cage drivers, but does anybody get this on their bikes? Dont believe i ever have.

I do every day

Yeah, done it before on the way back from Plymouth on the old NC30. Had a sudden 'where the bloody hell am I? Where have I just been?' moment! Quite worrying.

Regardless of speed, riding my bike mostly chills me out,and I find when I'm relaxed I pay more attention.

In the bubble,I believe.

Different from driving while asleep,mind.

I went through a tunnel on the M40 into London this morning that I don't ever remember seeing before. I was convinced I was on the wrong road until I hit Hanger Lane....

So how long have you been doing that particular route before you noticed the tunnel?

There is no tunnel on the M40.

I think I missed most of the 1990's on the same basis

It's quite common and is often refered to as using your 'lizard brain' I think.
something to do with simple repetitive actions that you are used to doing thus no need to use the conscious brain! so it wanders off for a bit.
It is nothing to worry about particularly as if anything had happened, you would have reverted without even noticing.
If you post the same question in SS, Spin will tell you all about it.

"A man may fight for many things. His country, his principles, his friends, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. Personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn."

I used to get this on the Bandit, but the ZX7R is so uncomfortable at 'pottering' speeds that i'm constantly 'on one' and riding like my hair's on fire.

You don't need to 'concentrate' on most of your riding, much as you don't concentrate on gear-changing (after you have progressed from being a novice), so I see that running on 'autopilot' is fine, as long as you wake up if there is a hazard!

This is where loud cans and riding with headlights on full comes into it's own..

I remember riding around Birmingham once and my mate was riding behind me. We pulled into some services and he said that he thought I was going to crash into a horse box that was on the motorway. To this day I barely remember seeing a horse box in the far distance, but god knows how I didn't see it when I got up close, let alone get passed it. I reckon that was more due to a lack of sleep, but I do admit to going on to autopilot sometimes when on the bike, but not as much as when I'm in the cage.

yup, for sure... btu i think its more zoning Into what i'm doin than zoning Out into a day dream iyswim?

there's a couple of lengthy routes i ride regularly that i really really enjoy riding, esp if its late nite/ early morning, and i find that i often sorta "come to" and have to think where abouts along the route i am to get my bearings as i've not been payin attention to the scenery/landmarks ie the bigger pic but have been totally in a bubble zoned into my riding...

is that what you mean

That's under Hanger Lane, if you managed to hit Hanger lane after the tunnel you must have gone back to it!

I may have lost my way, but I'm way ahead of schedule.
