Potential Commute from London To Luton (M1)

Evening all,

I've been asked to find out what a potential commute would be like from London (say Hammersmith but suggest other places that would be convenient to live) to near Luton via the M1 (has to be via the M1)

Would be by bike and car (not at the same time natch)

How long would it take?
Is it it simply a non starter?

Cheers

Hi

I do Luton to Baker Street, it takes an hour - hour 10 minutes, through the road works on the M1.

Its not that bad really.

Only problem is people keep crashing...

I'm an idiot

Sorry, I should have been more specific, it's not central Luton but to a place to the west of the M1 that's v near Luton just off the A5 I think..if there's an easier way to there then please help out!

Living in London, commute out to Luton if that makes sense.

an hour was kinda what I was thinking, cheers fella ('ped rider)

yep, i live near the A5 /M1 and when i bike in (to wandsworth so i go through hammersmith) the commute is around 1 hr - but as someone said there are carriageway roadworks on the M1 at the mo to possibly slow you down, tho your commute will be a lot easier than going the other way!!

(and if the weather is nice you culd always go the twisty route through amersham etc )

wish I was a weeble

Dunstable?

You can come off at J9 and go down the A5, but I find I end up stuck behind slower traffic, than if I stay on the M1 until J11 and go along Dunstable Road(not sure of the road name)

So going against the traffic (ie heading north in the morning) will possibly be easier? Even in a car?

Nope, it's literally just off the M1/A5 junction, can't remember exactly where though

Edit: Markate or something.

I would have guessed Hockliffe - except I don't think there are more than 2 companies there (and one is macdonalds!)

Actually bet it is Harpenden...

once you are out of town it will be easier...till you hit local traffic but that rush hour is usually about 10 mins!

That will be fine, it's not that far. Against the main flow of traffic so I wouldn't expect much worse than 45-50 minutes. Pretty much nothing by London standards

Easy route too, north circ, M1. And do use the M1, it's miles easier and less hassle (does depend to some extent on precisely where the destination is)

would it be Markyate?

from Hammersmith to Markyate would be approx 46 mins (well, according to Microsoft Autoroute anyway)

that takes you up to the A40, then along the A40 to the Hanger Lane roundabout, along the NCR to the M1, off at J9 (A5) and it's just up there

May they bury me upside down, so as the whole world passes by, they can kiss my ass!!!!
