Patents! Anyone got one or know how to get one cheap?

Hello,
First post in ages...

A quick question, a couple actually!

I have this great invention and was wondering if there is a cheap way of getting one done.

The local lot of Patent Attorneys charge 600 quid just to get the ball rolling and then its 600 several times over the period of 3 years!!

Anyone know a cheaper way? Or anyone on here actually got a patent? If so what for... apart from a 'self abuse' machine, thats already been patented, one of my great ideas down the drain.

I think I remember reading if your charged that amount of money they were ripping you off. I thing you just have to register it with the pattents office, sorry bit vague I know.
