patent help?

We've come up with what we believe to be a unique idea for a product. Intial searches for products matching the description have proven fruitless so we think we're good to go. I've used the beta google patent search for US patents and returned nothing - so it looks good.

Where we are coming unstuck is the UK. I am very nervous about going to a search agent for fear of poaching the idea. So if anyone here can rpovide guidance it would be really welcome.

Also in order to make a good bid for a patent is there a set format for the paperwork? I have sketched the idea down with each feature with an explaination of what each does. The workings of some of the features are left a little open as I'm not an engineer so it would just be an example of what the feature would result in not how it would work.

If anyone works in this area to maybe we can talk business, I'm not going to blindly accept the first offer etc but am more likely to (foolishly?!? ) trust someone here than just via an agent search.

Thanks

Mike

Isn't RevFred in that line of business?

Dreaming of life in a modern secular democracy. If you find one, please let me know. Apart from France, that is, because it's full of cheese

Indeed he is, I'll PM his details to Hagar.

His usual moan about 'unique products' is that they ARE usually patentable ideas, but AREN'T usually any good commercially :smoke:

In the USA, patents successfully applied for by the National Security Agency (NSA) are not disclosed on any searches. They only become available for viewing in the public domain if someone tries to patent the same idea, then they are revealed. So if you've come up with a design for some sort of covert death ray, you might have been beaten but won't know until you apply

Well, you need to work out HOW it works, you can't patent the end product. Like when they tried to patent scrollbars, etc. You need to work out how it will work.

i think you would need a working prototype first to patent it. can be something very simple. But i also have a nice idea and would really like to know the basics of this patenting crap. i heard it costs a lot to get stuff patented especially for multiple countries. is this true?

yes. And then China copies it anyway.

Good Luck.

Searches southward of a k depending on how radical your invention is. Do you have any idea how much BS is so-called 'patented'? FFS. Microsoft and Apple get hit up with patent suits every 5 seconds by mouth-breathers from Gloucestershire.

And other places.
