Currently have an adsl modem and router and want to make this a wireless setup. Going to plug xbox directly into existing router and have another 2 pcs in another room.

What kind of combination of access points and bridges do I need to hook things up.

Cheers

Easiest way would be 1 access point wired up to the router.

1 wireless network card in each of the PCs.

You could use the wired network cards in the PCs and set up a wireless bridge, but it's going to be more expensive, and (going by my experiences of setting bridges up) a lot more hassle.

Easiest thing would be to buy a combined router/hub/wireless access point. I have one, works great, got PCs wired into it and PCs on wireless plus it plugs straight into the phone line and does the modem bit and some firewalling.

You're looking for something like this on ebay, at 20 quid its the easiest thing to do.

Why? If he's already got a router, what would be the point in replacing it with a wireless one?

A standalone WAP would work alongside what he's already got, and would mean less faffing about as he wouldn't need to reconfigure the router side of things over again.
