What a hoot and I can't wait to do it all again - sooner rather than later too.

ARRIVAL

Fridays ride down to France was rather uneventful. Motorway motorway motorway - well, for me and Dylan. The rest of the guys pissed off and went the "twisty" way, which actually wasn't! Still, I managed to get an indicated 170-ish down the motorway - through a speed camera (obviously I wasn't doing 170 but the needle was pointing in that direction so I am claiming it). Very tiring though seeing as I never got to sleep on the ferry till gone 1:30/2am and then had a rapid ride (not touching under 120) down to Melle.

Got to Chateau Flash - and what a massive place. A magnificent house if ever there was one - well, infact 3 houses. Dylan and I had a house all to ourselves (although I reckon that's because I have a bit of a reputation - which I lived up to of course).

The others arrived later in the afternoon; the beer ran freely, the wine and food were out of this world. A few of us retired to chez m00 for a drink, and then Flash's son Jeremy arrived from Paris to Melle on his RSV. A journey I wouldn't do on a Mille, then again 20 mins on one of those killed my arms.

Flash and Jeremy went to bed, the party in chez m00 didn't finish though and me and Dylan didn't turn in to about 2:30am. More beer and pizza (which we found in the freezer, probably not for us, but we ate them!).

DAY 1

Riding was mainly split up in to 4 sessions, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. Saturday was the ride to the Cognac region and took a while to get in to the swing of things being my first time on foreign roads. Nearly got wiped out on the first roundabout about a mile in to the ride. This muppet (me that is) didn't look left and just went out thinking it was clear, to spot a car in the corner of my left eye. Had to give it some to get in front, and left Pierre wincing at my wonderful manoeuvre.

First sessions (am) riding was nothing special (my riding, not the roads), but session 2 was pretty good. Getting the hang of things and riding with Slug and Tim (Rothgar's pal) who I was happy following or being in front of. Found that my bike is rather prone to the odd tank slapper though which was a bit scary at times. I had to do the actions of an Olympic runner to try and keep it under control.

After lunch I bagged a go on Slugs very very special looking R1. What an experience that was! After riding it on the first session in the afternoon I parked up, got off the bike and couldn't even walk - infact I collapsed - bloody knackering or what!! I eventually surfaced to meet the others for a drink and was laughed at - a lot. My initial reaction was to get my couch back, but I didn't - and had another go for the second afternoon session (why I don't know), and the bike made love to me, and I made love to it - infact, I have offered to buy it off him when he sells it. I was tail end this time though (as I was too slow on it the first time), but I didn't loose anyone - well, except when I never told anyone I was actually tail end and me and Slug went wandering off the beaten track - still, that was fun too! Really enjoyed myself on it, my grin went around my head twice - it will be mine (He wouldn't let me ride it again though (and I'm even listening to the Sex Pisotls "Never Mind The Bollocks" to understand the paint job - not bad is it!))

Back at the ranch, for some swimming and slug swimming in his under suit (shocking), more excellent (and I can't stress that enough) food, wine, beer, beer, beer, beer, a special PA from a throwback of one of the robots from the late Smash Potato advert it was a sugar holder that looked just like one (see my avatar) so of course we were doing stupid things and moving it's "mouth" in time of our impressions, beer, even more beer - and Aftershock!

The deal was when I went to France I was going to loose my hair and have it lopped off, but managed to wangle out of that one on the deal I model my gimp waterproofs - not quite what I wanted to do without there being any rain, but hey ho - funny when that happened lots of people seemed to go to bed (obviously to go fantasize about me I reckon), and more worrying was that slug actually quite liked my suit! Anyway, those who stayed came back to chez m00 where we carried on till the early hours again. Slug was the last to leave, to which I had this idea to go in to the main house and wake everyone up. Slug vanished, I didn't wake anyone up because I had no idea where I was going and I couldn't find my way out of the house and had to sleep on the floor in the living room... yes, don't ask.

DAY 2

Not a particularly nice day this I am afraid to say. The ride was going to go to Oradour sur Glane, except we never made it. Unfortunately the ride took us to a hospital. The first sessions ride in the morning was OK, I was enjoying myself. The second sessions ride - excellent.

Now, on a ride out I never pass anyone, not that I can't but just that if I am sitting behind someone and they are in front, then I'll stay there until they drop off and then get on with it. This section though - I couldn't help myself. Was behind Flash and Jeremy behind me for a lot and Jeremy isn't too shabby on a bike, but there was no way he was overtaking me, so were hooning about. The Fazer is so soft for me, and is set up to handle straight bumps quite well so I can blast it where as the other guys weren't too happy (about the only good thing to be said about the suspension). I had to drop off which made me then at the back, but I was getting right in to it and wanted to make myself at the front of the pack again. I have never on a ride out overtaken someone, I'm happy to hold my position and wait for the person in front to drop off.

Goodbye Twids, goodbye Dylan - I was pretty spot on and it felt good. Tim was in front and Rothgar in front of him. Tim started to overtake Rothgar and I'm now also just starting to make a move on Rothgar and getting Tim in my sights - if only it worked that way.

Tim took a corner and the road just disappeared and went grass tracking through a fence and in to a field, landing in a ditch. Lucky he was OK considering it could have been a lot worse as in the ditch there was a think bit of plastic tubing which missed his head by inches. He was taken away to hospital, bike removed, pissed farmer informed (and he fell over pushing the bike out of the field!), and a sombre ride to the hospital was had. Rothgar was in shock, I was teetering on the edge seeing as the last thing I saw was a VFR going in to a cloud of dust, but news later found that he had done his shoulder and his back in, but was in decent enough spirits - good news at least then. God know what made the girls miss this ride out (Rothgar and Tim were 2 up), but if that wasn't a bit of 6th sense I don't know what was. The ride back from the hospital was interesting shall we say. There is a series of bends and a nice long stretch of hills - lots of them. Doing these at silly speeds and my crap set up on my bike made me bottom out the suspension and then slap and nearly loose it on the return - parp, and that was me done.

The evening was noisy. Verses of Electric Six's "Gay Bar" track were created - all night long to roars of laughter, I don't think we have laughed, any of us, so much - ever. We were told we were too noisy and to go in to the house. Certainly rated as THE night. More beer and pizza devoured of course. Rothgar and the girls were at the hospital with Tim and getting things sorted out for him. Phy5ics and Slug were the last to leave chez m00 back to the main house where they were staying and managed to lock Flash out when he eventually arrived home at gone 3 am, nice one, Slug!

DAY 3

We were to go back and have a crack at Oradour sur Glane. Flash was adamant we would make it, and make it back in one piece. The day before when Tim had his accident it was mentioned about his pillion foot pegs being down and he didn't need them down as Lesley wasn't with him, so today we all rode with ours down. It was funny, but I actually thought that was a nice touch - in hospital, but not forgotten.

And we made it! Bad idea for me to go tail end Charlie again though. Dylan wanted to take in some of the sights, which is fair enough and I was in no rush after the day before, but, mate - roadage or what. First session on the morning I didn't mind going slow as I saw about 30 half naked stunning girls in a swimming pool which was quite nice, and the scenery was pretty decent too, however I would have liked to hoon with the others about 30 mins in to it. The ride was OK I guess, I backed off on a few bits and still had a little play. Doom Road (because of FG on the first VD crew visit, and Tim the day before) was actually my favourite I think.

We got to Oradour sur Glane - marv! I had no idea what this was about actually. When I found out it was an old town they left in its war like state I was a little disappointed as I have no interest in it. However, that has changed; I was moved by it, very surreal indeed. What was interesting though was that 9/10 houses had sewing machines in them, just noteworthy for it being bizarre at the time. Something that was shocking and really woke me up was the church where the Nazis rounded all the kids and women up, you could see where the bell of the church had melted.

The graves of 4 generations of people was disturbing and the list of the victims, one 5 days old I think was the youngest one I saw. I was actually choked up. The memorial part with people possessions found got me though. I wandered around aimlessly. I could tell Slug was affected by it too, but I had to go outside and wait for him (the others had moved on to look at other things by this time), just couldn't be in there. There wasn't much talking between the 2 of us when catching up the others.

Still, I'm glad I went, a real eye opener it really was. Slug showed me some pictures in a book he was reading of corpses being recovered, yeah, nice.....

Ride back to the Chateau, I should of dropped the tail end malarkey but didn't mention it, just wasn't on my mind at that point. Phy5ics came and had a play, and when I knew we were near home I gave it up and had a play. I'm upset Pierre never saw my back wheel try and meet me in my mirror when I was going around a very slow bend in town - a real arse clenching moment. Bloody bike pile of junk.

Back at the Chateau - oh no! A beer drought!! 2 cases left, we done a case between us in 20 minutes! Argh, what to do!?!? The Essex crew did warn you Mon Flash we like our beer Anyway, more messing about in the evening. I think this is the evening we had cucumber soup - very different indeed, but the food was excellent - through out the whole weekend I couldn't knock a single thing, ate everything, with seconds and thirds thrown in for good measure. Absolutely excellent and I'll miss the food especially.

This was a particularly late evening. Flash got drunk, but I have to say was helped by Phy5ics. Hilarious, Flash would be drinking his glass of wine and when it got low, Phy5ics would secretly fill it back up again when he wasn't looking, even when Flash said no more, Flash would turn and talk to someone and there was Phy5ics filling it up again. It all got too much for Flash in the end and he went off to bed.

Phy5ics was the last person in chez m00 this evening and the time was knocking on when he left and the subject of Slugs snoring came about again - of course, I had to go and have a listen - bloody hell!!! He was on the third floor and you could hear him on the second! I thought it would be a good idea to nick all his bike gear. There I am crawling around on the floor of his and Pierre's room looking about in the dark for boots, leathers, gloves, lid, under suit. Now, I had been in his room before when we got him for day twos piss up in my place, so I sort of knew where things were kept. Getting the lid, gloves, boots and under suit out were easy, the leathers though were on the floor down the side of his bed - with his face pointing at me snoring away, so I had to drag them out over the floor as the snoring kicked in and then stop then start again because I didn't want to wake him up,

It only took over an hour to get all his kit out of his room. It was taken back to the house and it was put in my wardrobe.

Last day/going home

Dylan woke me up to tell me Slug was looking for his stuff, which made me smile, half heartedly went back to sleep to hear footsteps and my door being opened - and there he was, the Slugster. Bastard found his kit too, I knew the night before he would find it, but was too tired to think of plan B. I was going to go down in all of it for breakfast, so that was that plan was scuppered. Was supposed to go out for a 1-1 ride with Flash in the morning, but I didn't get to sleep till gone 4am, and he was a bit worse for wear in the morning, so that was shelved.

Was sad to leave Flash really. The hospitality was second to none, the house amazing, food 10/10 - couldn't have asked for better, the roads and organisation excellent too. Don't worry Dad, see you again soon!

The journey home was crap. It was windy, but nothing major but I was getting blown about so much and the fact my bike had given me quite a few surprises that weekend to the point I was bloody pissed off with it. I mean, motorways - big deal, and I couldn't even ride on that!!!

Was so tired, guess that didn't help but had started to loose a bit of confidence in my bike. Having a triangular front tyre and a square rear, plus suspension that is way off the mark of being set up to how I should have it made it a bit of a nightmare over the weekend to be honest. Couldn't go anywhere as near the speed I wanted to without having things step or slap. Still, today the first thing I have done today about that is to take it to MCTechnics next week and get that sorted for a cool £180 set up and new fork springs. Tyres to sort.

Had a small straight lining session on the motorway, got it to 160 (indicated) before I backed off and bottled it.

Fell asleep on the ferry whilst the other guys played cards. Slug went to sleep and we were all waiting with recording equipment to record loud snoring, but it was never to happen.

We were all to meet to say our goodbyes in the car park afterwards - well, that's the idea anyway. It didn't happen. Rothgar I don't think was aware of it and went home. I don't think Slug was aware of it either and decided to hit the road, I followed, then Phy5ics came zooming past, and then I realised I was actually on the motorway going to bloody Southampton! Anyway, Dylan sorted it out and collected me, and then Slug must off pulled off on to the motorway going to London as he went. We got back to the ferry place and Twids was there still so we then left for home and met again at Thurrock services. My ride home was appalling and that's what had given me a kick up the arse to get the bike sorted now - it's gotten worse over the weekend. I was going to get it done before I went, and I'm kicking myself all the way to Melle and back that I never sorted it out and the tyres. Oh well, a lesson learnt (knob that I am).

A little peeved about not saying bye to everyone - was such an excellent weekend, the best company anyone could have ever asked for - really was spot on. Was a shame about Tim, because that means I missed spending time with Rothgar, Tim and the girls - but shit happens, shame it happened to anyone on this trip though.

Anyway, let's get together again soon, what a bloody riot it was.

I can 100% recommend Flash Tours Inc - you WILL have a great time. Treated like royalty, fed like kings.

Thank you all. See ya again real soon I hope. Loads of new people I would like to regard as friends and not just people I know on VD.

Marv!

Excellent read - I can't believe you had such issues with your bike though!

Swiss

If you ride from Switzerland to Cognac without doing the fantastic Montbrison-Ambert-Billom-Clermont road, which is more or less on your route, you need shooting

Go via Vichy and I'll kill you myself

You have about the best ever choice of routes right across France from where you are

Moo that was an excellent post, for a quick note, now when are you going to write the long version?

Seriously though that was spot on and well written.

And I didn't realise about meeting up after the ferry,I was busy though trying to find the non existent taxi for Angela and Lesley.

I did wonder how they were getting home. I bet the cab wasn't cheap either

Brownie: Well worth doing. I think Flash may be running them again next year.

Mr Tack: Twids had a camera and also took some strange videos of the Mash Get Smash man, Slug sleeping on the ferry on the way home, and Phy5ics doing, well, God knows what he was doing. Some strange dance. I think Pierre took some pictures and Slug did aswell so hopfully they should be available soon.

Swiss Toni: Yup, bike sucked. I knew I should of had it looked at before I went and that was the intention, just never got around to it. Still, the peeps and the humour around the table more than made up for it. The quality of my riding has bugged me a bit, but there will be other times so not all is lost.

Glad to hear you had an equally good time as we did in May apart from FG, Nick and Tim obviously At least you were able to get back to Odadour, which we never made - next time though

I hope Tim doesn't have the hassle that FG. had in getting home and wish him a speedy recovery

Tim has asked me to post a big thanks to all you guys (Moo, Pierre, Phy5ic5s, Slug, Dylan, Twids and last but by no means least Flash) for all your support and help since his off.

Latest info from yesterday was he is feeling alot better and they were going to try and get him out of bed (but leave the 2 french nurses in it)!
