Migraine

Right then, I've managed to make it into my 40s without ever having suffered from these abominations so I have little experience of the optimum way to deal with them.
I was prescribed Sumatriptan (Imigran) which was effective on my first bout in January of this year, but remarkably ineffective on this one which I've had since last Wednesday. Frankly, the novelty has now worn orf. Which is more than I can say for the pain
The quack has now prescribed Maxalt (don't get me started on the appallingly wasteful packaging of this drug) which has worked for two hours. Coincidentally this is the exact amount of time before I am allowed to take another, which I have done. The effect of this latter dose has now worn off, and I'm resorting to Tramadol, which at least takes the edge off the pain, but hasn't done a thing about the intense pressure within my eye socket.

I've no idea why I should have started to suffer now; right now it's not a priority to determine the reason. What is a priority is to find some relief, given I can't take any more Maxalt until tomorrow late afternoon

I'm utterly fed up with feeling like shit.
Anyone got any bright ideas? (Not too bright though, it hurts my head)

Cheers

Feverfew and Valerian are good herbal remedies you can try.

My sister has suffered all her life. so bad that once ,when 8 months pregnant, it paralised her down her left side and she collapsed.

She takes the strongest nurofen there is ( don't know what it's called) and goes to bed with a hot water bottle on the area of the pain. Apparently its due to muscles tightening and the heat from the hot water bottle relaxes them. It works for her.

Migraleve sort mine out but you must take them the instant you feel one coming on.
I get patterns in my eyes first (classic migraine) so as soon as i see them start i take two pink tablets. If i leave it for twenty minutes then they don't work.

My MIL swears by icy cold water - upon the onset of a migrane she puts her hands and wrists in a basin of ice and cold water. Migraine pain is caused after the blood vessels dilate following a period of constriction. Hands in ice water can help to divert some of the blood to the extremities to warm them up.

Haven't a clue. I just know what my sister has told me and how she deals with it. Most of the long term sufferers, like yourself, have found easy to get over the counter stuff works best. Not all these powerful drugs from the doc's

Also everyone seems to be different and alternant ways of dealing with the pain. My sister is the only one i know of who uses a hot water bottle. She swears by it. Most others use cold things. Go figure

That wouldn't help at all. Dope would.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll certainly try some of them! Not sure I can grab a hot water bottle in the middle of today's Board meeting, although it just might work to distract the Directors from our plummeting share price!
Migraleve (so the quack told me yesterday) is nothing more than paracetamol, codeine and an antihistame Buclizine (for nausea). I take regular medication so I bought an annual pre pay certificate. I prefer to have meds prescribed than buy them OTC as I've paid for them already!

Blasted things - they're horribly debilitating.

Lynne have you considered sinus problems could be sparking it off.

I have suffered for the last couple of years and eventually traced it back to my sinus's.
I get a wierd feeling in my mouth and forehead, then if I don't sort it quick I get the mother of all pains in my eye sockets and forehead, followed by colours floating in my eyes etc.
I had one about a month ago which I can only describe as agonising pins and needles in my forehead and eyes, it actually felt like my forehead had ballooned out about 6 inches and my eyes were going to pop. I absolutely shit myself and thought I was having a stroke.

If I catch it quick enough I can stop it. I have a nasal wash spray thingy which I use to throroughly clean my hooter, then eat two dihydrocodiene, two paracetamol and a warm drink with suger in. Cocodamol which essentially contain the same ingredients don't work.

The doctor reckons I'm talking bollocks but it works for me and like I said if I catch it in time I can stop a lot of misery. Since I've been using the nasal cleanser the migraines have been much less frequent.

Aye!

My OH gets them really bad, 1 side of her body goes numb, slurred speech the lot.
I've only had 3 thankfully. 1st one was the worst as I was vomiting as well.

Lynne,

Silly question probably, but have you had your blood pressure checked? The reason I ask is I got to 34 without hardly ever having a headache in my life, I now get crippled (can't get out of bed, cant stand light etc) for days on end. They found my blood pressure was massively high and I'm now on 2 different blood pressure pills. It hasn't stopped the migraines totally, but they are no where near as bad as they were. I'm still fighting to get more tests etc...

As for the packaging of Maxalt - unbelievable I know!

I take amatriptaline when they get bad now, which seems to shift persistent ones, but knocks me out for about 4hrs, 30-40mins after taking it.

hth a little.

my BP was 100/60 yesterday, so I don't think it's that.
A propos Maxalt I was wondering how it came to be so packaged. I wonder if Merck were responding to patient demand, perhaps it's a pharmaco-legal thing (minimum data required on the packaging).
What on earth are you supposed to do with the natty little blue boxes?!

I use them for bits n pieces ( I m a squirrel after all) I have some cotton buds in one in my camera bag, some small screws in the shed etc

Migraleve never worked for me. I also got sick of having to carry them everywhere.

Now I just take two paracetemol as soon as I spot the classic patterns in my vision, so long as I get it early enough it seems to work. Then it's a best policy to go and lie down for a while, if possible. (Ibuprofen also work but my stomach doesn't get on with them.)

poke a fork into where the pain is and the 4 little holes will release the pressure

You just have to accept that riding a bike is like sex. Always approach it that it could be the last ride you ever have so give it all you've got, nail it from start to finish.
