Master file table rebuild

Sorry to put this in here but a fast reply would really help me.

I'm told there's a command for rebuilding the master file table using the command console when u boot from a XP cd. Can anyone tell me what the cammand is? can't find on net, making me doubt it exists. The aim is to delete knackered XP installation, repair the file table in case its corrupted (can't just do a format as unable to back up large amounts of needed data), then reinstall XP.

Anyone know? ta.

doh own question answered sorry. my dozy m8 meant the MBR. wondered what he was on about...
