Headline stuff in recent years..

It also seems (from the Blackwatch thread) that opinion on if this really should be news or not is split..

I find it odd that in a war situation a soldier being killed jumps to the main story.

But.. do you think it now hits the headlines because we are so good at war (and usually fight people that are shit at it) that people are genuinely surprised that a soldier is lost...

Or do you think that this is kinda being encouraged, whipping up support from some people by planting that "damn dirty rag-heads.. they killed our boys, let's do the lot of them" type of thought in the head of anyone (which, unhappily, is probably a fair few) stupid enough to be swayed like that?

This amaze's me why do people over emphasize things, so what's wrong in saying "damm dirty rag-heads" kill the fuckers i don't think they mean every Iraq'y just the ones that are trying to kill the British soldier, regardless of right or wrong these lads and lass's are my line of defence which if the worst came to worst and there was a (normal) war these people are protecting me and will be dying to protect me and you, so yeh i call em fuckin ragg-eds! but i don't walk in to my Kebab shop and shout "OY ragg-ed giv us a donna"(with a bit of chilli please)

It is a hard news story - but I don't like the way it has been handled. But 24-hr rolling news means having to fill a full 24 hours of air-time with every last cough and spit of detail.

Plus I think it's symptomatic of the media-inspired mawkish, hand-wringing, I'm-more-sincere-about-a-stranger's-death culture that has sprung up post-Diana.

After every death politicians of all sides have to trot out the "may I first extend our deepest condolences to the family of ...." Let's just take that a given shall we and get to the point of the issue.

The media wants to see angry grieving relatives. Who will get media prominence? The family that says "bring Our Boys home now, Mr Blair" or the family that says "my boy was a soldier first and died doing his duty. We don't have words to express our pride for his courage..."

That'll please the Black Watch boys:

Bush declared victory in May last year if memory serves.

Soldiers getting killed in a peace keeping operation has always been news. cf. Northern Ireland 1967-1998 - there were strong opinions about that as well IIRC.

Oddly it makes a difference.

People expect to get killed at war.
They DONT expect to get killed when trying to get a country back on its feet.

Hence it IS news.
