Why is it called horsepower ?? i dont get it and never have.

You take 1 horse...... it has 1 horse power but can pull a tractor along right ?

So why does a 125cc bike have say 15hp but could'nt pull the skin off a rice pudding ?

Why is it called horse power because it clearly dont have anything to do with the power of a horse ????

I tried putting horses in my fuel tank for more power - they wouldnt fit and kicked my bike over, they then led a rebel alliance attack against my local village brandishing flaming torches shouting slogan's like "horse power forever"

blah blah blah etc etc......

Horsepower is defined in terms of the ability to raise a certain weight a certain height in a certain time
This is what a horse could do
Your bike engine can do (insert horsepower) times that

'S irrelevant anyway, largely.

As the great Carroll Shelby used to say "horsepower sells cars, but torque wins races"...

Originally, there was something called "nominal horsepower" and it was applied to steam traction engines during the industrial revolution. It applied directly to how many horses the machine could replace and do the work of.

Horsepower was then later given a exact definition in terms of a conversion ito Watts, but the name stuck.

HTH

Works on datsuns. Relaxes in fords.
