Helmets and Visors

Hi

Does anyone know the current legal requirements for markings on crash helmets?

Guy a work just bought a new Shark lid. It is E marked and has an ACU gold sticker but no BS sticker. Also the visor doesn't have a BS stamp. Both of these would have been illegal but I don't know what current rules are with regard to E markings.

All the best

There's a cloth tag sewen on to the chin strap or inside the helmet with a number starting: 05******* (if the number starts with another number it approved for a different country with in the EU) or a sticker with CE22.05. on the outside.

BSI stickers although still legal are being fazed out

It's not speed that kills. Its the sudden stop at the end.

E or BS marked visors are legal

They recently got rid of the BS TypeA and TypeB on helmets, if its got a Gold Sticker and maybe an E somewhere else on the helmet then its legal.

The Gold sticker is a ACU approval and is nothing to do with road regs regarding helmets

ACU (Auto Cycle Union) is a race standard not a road standard, l have seen a plastic outer shelled helmet with a ACU sticker.
l know which type of outer shell (for a crash helmet before the normal comments),l'd prefer to put my head in.

A 'Gold' stickered race helmet may not have for example sufficient peripheral vision to be road legal, even though it's a perfectly safe helmet in all other respects.

They don't put a kit mark on new helmets which conform to the EEC standard, you will find a tab in the helmet bearing the require standard.

The visor markings are as follows.
Motor Cycle (Eye Protectors) Regulations 1999
The Personal Protective Equipment (EC Directive) Regulations 2002

€¢ Eye protectors which bear British Standard approval marks (4110 - X, XA, YA or ZA),
€¢ any other equivalent standard accepted by an EEA state and marked to indicate that standard,
€¢ conformity with the requirements of Council Directive 89/686/EEC as amended (goggles),
€¢ those which conform with ECE Regulation 22.05 including the approval, marking and conformity of
production requirements of that Regulation,
€¢ eye protectors first used before 1/4/89 with lenses that are designed to correct a defect in sight and
which transmit 50% or more of the light and do not fly into fragments if fractured.

Hi

Thanks for that. Reading those regs it sounds like a tinted visor is now perfectly legal as long as it is marked with a standard acceptable in some other EEA state.
