New government website aimed at getting people's views on many laws, including speed cameras. Have your say and see what we can achieve...

You would think they could have invested in a server that doesnt take all day to load

must be the cutbacks

It'll be interesting to see how it is used once it settles down. Will the Daily Prole and Torygraph editors muster up a campaign of NIMBYs or will whatever remains of the counter-culture highjack it?

I expect it will be easy for the government avoid doing the really hard things (like legalising all drugs but selling them along with alcohol from strictly licensed premiss only) and easy to show they are doing the things that they want to do...

I expect there is a lot on the misuse of the Human Rights Act and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act that will never get touched.....  Be interesting to see what they come up with for unshackling business regulations though.

Since they want to look at laws that have eroded civil liberties can I'd like to start with the repeal of the helmet (and seat belt) laws.  There is no reason to be told to wear these things and no dis-benefit to anyone particularly - other than the (non-)users for not wearing them.....

Yeah, but it's expensive looking after a paraplegic. On the other hand, think of the gene pool....

On speed cameras?... they arent nearly combustible enough, make em out of cardboard, and you can put them where you like.

From alternators to zip-ties, Wemoto's got it, and we'll send it anywhere.

You should be able to film the police again, this was a law sneaked through by Labour.

You are allowed to photograph what you like in a public place - but the thicker plod certainly like to behave as if there is some law to stop you.

Seen this particularly dim plod having a go at a 16 year-old photographer?

Labour passed a law a while ago, my wife demonstrates a lot and basicly they were told not to film plod as they can now be done for it due to a law being passed through.  Its only been done recently.

I don't believe there is such a law.

They might try to pull a Section 44 but that has been deemed illegal by the European courts.

What's the real reason we hate them.

Is it really because we feel our liberties are being eroded, or is it an intrusion on our right to exceed the speed limits.

05/07/2010 at 05:30

I feel they are an intrusion on our privacy, and a step closer to a control freak state.  And let's be honest, real speeder, the ones they are designed to catch slow down and speed up when they see them, oh and chuck a tire over them.

The ones I really detest are the average speed cameras.

The pleasure of driving/riding is really dying out.

So is oil my friend and when we are all on electric bikes they'll be fitted with unremovable speed limiters. The liberals will have infiltrated top level government by then. I see a citizen revolt!

Nothing is 'unremovable'.

With a hammer maybe not, but it's not difficult for a manufacturer to build it into the EPROM of a closed circuit ECU. We'll see!

I doubt that a hack of a 'closed ECU' would be that complex, look at what people are doing with Power Commanders and the like.

Motor controlers are relativly simple.  Actually (pure) electric vehicles are pretty simple things to build anyway.

FJS is right, you can hack anything electrical, bypass or disable, clever people create software and hardware protection, clever people break and remove them them.

That's really bright.

So the cops pull you over for speeding which should be impossible on a restricted vehicle, and your bike is impounded and an investigation confirms that the restrictor has been tampered with.

I believe on commercial vehicles that are currently restrictricted, that constitutes a crime.

In a future world of speed limited vehicles (which I believe is coming), the moment you blast past someone, you're going to stick out like a sore thumb.

Easy to get around these things in theory, but in reality, very dangerous.

The point is that if vehicles are restricted one day, and you derestrict it, the moment you exceed the limit you're going to stand out, just a tad.
