Just reading the article in MCN about rider health. Does anyone actually wear full body armour for road riding? Seems a bit overkill.

Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture, torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals

I saw someone walking around the Yorkshire Bike Show wearing full body armour last Sunday. Back protector and arm pads over leathers mainly. Perhaps he thought a toddler might run into him while he was wandering around the displays and trade stands..?

depends doesn't it, I used to feel safe with standard pads (back, knee, shoulders and arms) that came with the gear I wear, but after the father in law hit a curb and punctured both lungs I've been thinking of getting one of those knox undershirts with the chest armour in.

I wear full knox body armour under my fleece rather than my leather jacket (bad I know) but I can't reach the bars with the leather jacket on. I can't turn my head at a junction due to the helmet hitting the shoulder armour cos I'm leant so far forward

Oh and I've had to take the chest protection out cos then I definatly wouldn't be able to reach the bars due to the tank being in the way. Just hope I don't get knocked off front facing down

This is only until I can afford another set of leathers............. or the new CBR1000

I've no doubt that one day I'll run out of amusing things to say in my signature line....but today is not that day!! :smoke:

It's built into my leathers so it I wear them, yes. That's only if I'm going to a trackday or rideout / somewhere to be silly on the bike though.

I usually just wear jeans, boots, gloves and a jacket of some sort - all my jackets have back, shoulder and elbow armour.

I don't think full leathers is / armour is overkill but I can't be bothered to wear them TBH.

The armour in leathers doesn't match up to my definition of full body armour, you never see the bomb squad approaching a suspect package dressed only in motorcycle gear do you?

Still, if T&M can't be arsed to clarify his terms he's not going to get a meaningful answer.

A fair point. The armour in my leathers doesn't even come close to motox body armour let alone bomb squad kit.

Interesting link on helmets in Survival Skills - which, IIRC, suggests that statistically, if you suffer a severe enough impact to trouble the protection provided by the helmet you are like to have a collection of other life threatening injuries. Could suggest that if you bother wearing a helmet in the expectation that it will save your life at some point - then you may as well have the armour too.

I mostly wear a helmet so my hair doesn't get messed up.

or you may as well not wear a helmet as death is probably a more inviting prospect than decades in a wheel chair sucking blended food through a straw
