someone i know (no not me!) just got back from holiday and is putting in a claim on his travel insurance. it is identical to a claim he made (legitimately) 2 years ago when returning from holiday. same bag, same cameras, same odds and sods. just different insurance policy.

i told him they cross reference, but he reckon that for £1000 they wont bother and also teh old claim never got paid out because the insuranc ecompany went bust. he feels therefore morally justified.

i think hes mad becaus ethe claim is delt with by loss adjusters an dnot the insurance company and i suspect teh first thing they do is put in a cross check against his name.

any insurance bods out there that can advise so that i can tell this guy to stop before he gets slapped on the wrists?

you'll get more than a slap ion the wrist, ops sorry he'll get.......its fraud

Have you filled your GARAGE in yet?

Tell him to just go into a shop and steal something expensive and sell it. Probably less risky.

(Don't try this at home kids, I don't mean this literally:rolleyes

Once the fraud dept. gets their teeth into it your f****d, they won't let go and always push for a custodial sentence.

I know someone who got 6 months for producing an insurance document that he had not paid for, daft bugger thought the police would look at it and say 'carry on' but they checked the database, had he just ridden without insurance it would be 6 points and a fine upwards of £100. I bet he'll find it hard to insure his pet dog now.

I think they do flag up claims, when I tried to switch my house insurance to another company, they refused because I had claimed for a rug that got burnt, at least three years previously.

Yep mine also knew about a previous claim and asked specifically about it when I started my policy with them..

I am sure some will slip the net but personally would think it not worth the risk for the sort of value hes talking about

If hes thick enough to use exactly the same details as his last claim then he deserves to get done for fraud.

IMO like.

He should at least change some of the items.

Remove the watch and add the Mona Lisa.

Insurance companies going bust usually make the headlines. Which one went bust two years ago?

Isn't there some backup organisation that the insurance companies pay into to cover claims in these circumstances? Wouldn't they have paid out his claim?

he'll have to be pretty daft to make the exact same claim. if he does a different claim then i dont really see how hes gonna get done in they'd have to prove he never had the stuff in the first place or something but how they gonna do that?

They're called underwriters Did he mean he took holiday insurance out with the holiday company and they went bust? Should still be able to claim.

Chances are he'll get away with it. Only likley to come to light if he is claiming the same goods in a very similar situation.

Buy the way it cheating cnuts like him who are pushing up the price of insurance for the rest of us.

Oh, if he does get caught, he's screwed both in terms of punishment and in terms of ever getting cover again. Thats any kind of cover not just travel...

Not advocating what he is doing....but how could he get caught? Just because it happened before, doesnt mean it cant happen again....and it sounds feasible enough, people lose bags all the time...why would insurers even question it? Short of him admitting he made it all up, how could they ever prove it didn't happen?

When i claimed for a lightning strike on the house after coming back from holiday, they even checked the specific weather on that week to make sure it was right.
They also wanted receipts for expensive items i was claiming for, stereo, etc
