I have to drive to Cumbria on Saturday, Whitehaven to be exact, I've checked the AA route finder web site and it tells me to go A1, A66, but I thought M1 M6 A66 might be quicker ( I'll be in a white van BTW), does anyone have any advice on this ?I'm looking for speed rather than scenery, as the van does 80mph tops and I want to get there load up and return all in one day !

A1 nth from the M25 will be a nightmare, there are just too many roundabouts.

I always jump across onto the M1 and then M6 when doing it in a car, not worth the aggro of dual carriageways and roundabouts.

yes but it breaks the journy up, and theres more rozzers on the M6, the cameras are easy to spot on the A1 they are all sign posted, but if you dont mind non stop motorway for as far as the eye can see, then do the M6 which can be a bit mad round birmingham as well

If you go up the A1 and across on the A66 be prepared to get stuck behind lorries on the single carriageway sections over the Pennines! They'll be going even slower than you will in a van.

Agree about the roundy-bouts on the A1 breaking the journey up... especially when I'm on on the bike.

Thanks for the replies, the M1 M6 route looks better then, as the big white shed doesn't go round roundabouts very quickly
