Dell - how the mighty have fallen

What utter utter shambles

Fella next to me at work got a new Dell laptop and it had a broken screen when he unpacked it.

3 weeks later he has made probably 60 or 70 calls to India and gets passed from pillar to post with nobody willing to sort it for him.
Their Irish office literally put the phone down on him.

He's on the phone again, returning a call from India (when he phoned them back they asked him who he was and why he was phoning them!) and is yet again explaining the whole thing to yet another person.

They don't even have a complaints dept to talk to.

Dell used to be superb at customer service, really superb...and now they are shit, complete and utter shit.

tell him to buy a "shit" acer

i've had my acer for AGES and it is bloody superb

Have to agree with you Nige.

My laptop is a DEll and fortunately no problems.

But the lad had a desktop from them a couple of years ago. He also had the extended warranty on it. Within 6 months of having the machine the graphics card went kaputt. Not a problem gauranteed repair, but oh no it took numerous calls to the Indian call centre as your friend said being transferred from one person to another.they even gave us a number to try from their alleged help desk which you could only access by entering your credit card details first(which I didn't do).

In the end after 4 days of numerous unreturned phone calls and being messed about I rang back the original number threatening them with breach of contract. The computer was collected the next day and returned fixed within 48hrs. Why they couldn't have done it to start with is beyond me.The customer service is appalling.

A few weeks later i was contacted by one of their representatives who wanted my views on their customer service. So they got it

Needless to say I shall not be giving them any further business.

I had loads of Dell laptops plus the right number to phone for the Dell Service Centre and they come out that day or the next with replacement parts or computer.

Never had a problem with them.

Apple of course are a different matter.

My Dell XPS laptop i;ve had for two years now. Had a wireless card fault a while ago and was fixed next day after phoning Service centre.

i;ve experienced a few Acer laptops and while they seem ok from looking inside they arent of the quality of Dell but not far off.

Cant wait to upgrade though as this is getting a bit long in the tooth as it wont play all the new games smoothly. So i think i need an SLI GFX laptop

Dell have been going down the pan a for a few years. Dell knew this and they pushed out a lot of their sales to business partners who can deal with the main company when there is an issue.

The quality has dropped off a bit but it was never a great product in the first place. They are still fairly good VFM but not good enough IMO.

Sorry..too old for that sort of nonsense

Laptops like most other things in life have the same ....you get what you pay for....quality.

If you pay 500 quid for a laptop and expect the quality and aesthetics to be as good as a laptop that costs a grand then it wont be simple as!!!

I would be mightily pissed off if I had to wait a week for a new keyboard.

Bugger... my work laptop gets refreshed next Wednesday... I'm losing my sturdy little Thinkpad which survived a big crash (in my top box)... I feel very attached to the old thing)... my new laptop is a Dell... hope it's better than some of the stuff I'm reading here...

Interesting op, BN - and comments from others.  Am looking at upgrading the desktop here and was seriously thinking of a DELL.  Not so sure now.  Thanks for the insight.

Will probably spec. it and see what the local guy can come up with - or build it here, as in the past.  Either of these is favorite as the existing hard drives can all be incorporated.

What, not another jolly ?

How long should a laptop last?

I tend to work on the basis that most electrical goods now are built as disposable, rather than something to get used to having for life. This is particulalrly so with the advances in technology, pretty well guaranteeing that obsolesence is built in.

I’m not allowed to have any of these as my avatar, so here they are on my sig instead. However, I now can't add any new ones

Did you ever hear anyone say “That picture had better be banned, because I might look at it and it might be very damaging to me”
