Avoid white Gixxers

I stumbled across the Essex Bikesafe crash statistics page and the MAIDS report earlier, which can be found at these URLs:

http://www.essex.police.uk/bikesafe/stats.htm

http://www.motorcyclesafetyinfo.com/maidsreport/maids_report.pdf

Cross-referencing sales and crash figures, along with comments in both reports I can conclude that the following are not condusive to continued good health:

  • Sportbikes.
  • 600 cc engines.
  • Suzukis.
  • The colour white.

So if you own a white Gixxer 600 then it was nice knowing you.

In contrast, bikes with engines over 1000 cc were under-represented in the statistics, so obviously faster and more powerful bikes are safer.

FTA
Contrary to popular beliefs about born again bikers, in Essex you are most likely to be killed if you are between the age of 25 - 35 years old. Generally we find this age group have the disposable income to afford the more powerful machines, and the higher insurance premiums they attract

Crash on Sunday, casualty, intensive care, life support then switch off on Monday??

Depends on what night the nearest biker meet is..In Hampshire its Wednesday

Actually most of the crashes in Essex happen on a Wednesday. So you're probably safe this week Gixxerlee.

Anyway, there is a solution: If you have a sex change then you're unlikely to have a fatal accident. Very few women are found in the Bikesafe statistics, and there was no mention of ladyboys...

Can't find the exact statistics I'm after but these are close enough and yes I know you should compare stats in the same year but they dont change that much.

8,724 alcohol-related deaths in 2007 (ONS)

3,201 Total road deaths in 2005 (ONS)

560 Deaths by drink driving in 2002 (BBC)

From these statistics you can deduce that its safe to drink and drive than it is to either drink or drive on thier own.

FYI, according to DfT and the ONS, the indexed KSI's by Day for 2007 (2008 report) are:

Monday - Thursday = 93.6, Friday = 109.8, Saturday = 101.9, Sunday = 114.2

Also, by hour (indexed), its:

00:00-6:00 = 15.5, 06:00-12:00 = 93.4, 12:00-18:00 = 180.6, 18:00-00:00 = 110.6

I think overall, if youre a white male between 40 and 49, riding a white GSXR600 on an urban road between lunchtime and 6pm on a sunday in August, youre fucked.

Also if youre interested, they quote the following: For all motorcycles, the contributory factors for accidents are:

Failed to look properly = 15%, Loss of Control = 15%, Failde to judge otehr persons path and or Speed = 12%, Careless, Wreckless or in a hurry = 10%, Poor turn or manouvre = 10%, Learner or inexperienced Driver = 9%, Travelling too fast for conditions = 7%

I thougth speeding was supposed to be the work of the devil, but clearly he has half a dozen other things on his mind before he even gets to travelling too fast.

Too fast for the conditions doesn't actually mean speeding either.  So of that 7% the number speeding must be lower.

That may be due to the tendancy of inexperienced riders to ride something less than 1000cc...

Then again I'd like to quote Homer Simpson:

“Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of people know that.”
