Classic Bikes

In a completely unprecedented move I went to the pub last night. Parked ouside were 3 machines glinting in the moonlight. A bonnie, a trumpet tiger and Laverda Jota. Ooooh yummy.

Do you hanker after a classic? Do you still really want to buy the bike you lusted after as a kid? Is it insanity to own something that only sees the light of day on high days and holidays?

Love to own one - a Triumph Tiger Cub would do me fine...

Funny how youngsters always seem to fancy a Cub. I would hate to have something that I couldn't look after to the degree it deserved.

I've got an 18 year old bike. If I still have that in 10 years that'll do me for a classic.

1) Got one
2) Might buy a JOTA as well as the Guzzi
3) No, just keep it maintained and it'll be fine (unless it's an RD500 or similar!)

A classic can be a practical machine as well. The fastest bloke I know down a country lane rides a 1954 Norton Dominator. If you want a cheap way into old bikes why not look at an old trials machine for a bit of green laning? £500 will get a usable BSA Bantum in trials trim.

Hairbrush,

You need a good project you do! Theres no way better to learn your way round a bike than to build it first from a pile of boxes!

Always fancied an old Brit single meslf, but not much room in the garage really. Guzzi lemans, Duke Pantah, 73 Honda 125, 78 Kaw 250 twin.

I sometimes wish I had my 600 Pantah back - great bike, but my Dad has a small but select collection from which I can get my classic kicks...

No way. I can barelyfind time to fill up my scottoiler. Besides I've got a 'project' c@r in the garage. Oh yes its a burgeoning classic that It must be its got seized brakes, a non-functional cooling system, flat tyres and if its metal its gone rusty.

... or a Matchless G3. Luckily I'm not allowed one. Old bikes are addictive.

There's a brand new Z1A in RAP Bikes on Cricklewood Broadway - never been ridden - been standing there for years.
Probably cos he wants very silly money for it!

No ta...

I rode an old BSA a while back... they don't go, they don't stop and they don't turn

oh, and they break down a lot

Wouldn't mind a modern classic though, like a Katana, GPZ Turbo, Norton F1 etc.

Rose tinted glasses are the problem with older bikes I often dream about my 120 and 750SS I forget the nightmare they were especially in the wet (electrics and Italians never used to mix) we didn't have.

I really like the idea of a Jota again just for the noise they make but I'd settle for a 3C - Or maybe a Triton - or maybe a Vincent OH OH OH OH a Thruxton would be cool ...

I nearly bought a 120 3/4 weeks ago and then I remembered pushing my old one for bloody miles in the South of france followed by more pushing in Spain, Italy and Germany with a final stint in Holland before I broke down in Kent and London - Classic touring yeah right.

Probably will at some point but it will only ever be used on special occasions - give me modern brakes handling and tyres for everyday use

I like old knockers [1]

I would love to have a few classics, can't justify it at the moment. Jota would be quite nice but I'd prolly kill meself on it, so might settle for something more sensible

H2 f'r instance

Wouldn't bother with old Brit bikes much tho' - soz about that, at least Jap classics keep going a little better

[1] Save it. Very old and not funny

Z1A's were nice but the original Z1 is the mutts'...not that I'd say no to any Z1 before '75...

Have ridden & owned a lot of 'classics' ,Brit, Jap,German & Italian. (Started riding in 1974....old git )

Have to say that Italian & Brits are my favourite. Don't think I would seriously consider having anything with the gear lever on the right again.

Used to be confusing in times of crisis

Love a Jota but too tall for me, really. I'd have another Guzzi. Had a T160 Trident but p/exed against a Hinckley triple. A good move, but I do miss the old beast!

Suppose I can see the appeal, having one Kawa of 18 yrs in stock...but stuff like old Beezers? Well, they weren't much cop when they were new, were they? Ain't gonna have improved through the passage of time...

I got two Bonnevilles, a BSA Bantam and a Montesa enduro bike. Probably rode 1000 miles in ten years till I got the ZX6R then I did 7000 in the first year. Nostalgia is all very well but modern bikes are so good in comparison.
