Catalytic converters on bikes

I note with disappointment mine's got one (somewhere ).

Question: Can I get rid of it? If I get the bike properly MOT'd by a stickler when the day comes, would it fail any kind of upcoming emission test?

Yes you can get rid of it.

No you won't fail an MOT test.

Buy a new exhaust section to replace the bit where the cat is. Make sure the new system has the necessary holes to take any sensors that may exist on the current system.

They are such nasty things on bikes !!!

I got a look at Severens bike on Sunday...Gorgeous S4 Monster.....with the huge gert big can on the bottom infront of the back wheel.....serious spoils the image !!!!

Get rid..that's what I say !

But it's probably a bad idea.....

Don't look into the light or it'll suck you in like a flea. We're dealing with big ugly powerful forces here, so don't go trying that macho man stuff. Put your super-block-em sunglasses on and keep your eyes on the accountant.

No it's not. Plenty of BM owners do it, I ran my 1100s without the cat for 80K and had no problems.

I'd definitly junk it.

Been thinking of scrapping the one on my car too.

Piece of shit that hardly makes a difference on short trips anyway, and strangles the engine.

If you do remove a catalist from a car/bike,what happens at MOT time?

A close friend is an MOT tester and has recerntly set up on his own, doing cage MOTs and basic repairs and told me the following.

For cars >1993/K, if a CAT is fitted, you can remove it and sail through an MOT because the CATS of this era were the first lot and 'unrealiable'. With all the cack that is bound to be clogged up in one by now on an early car, scrapping it for a decat pipe whne you need a new exhaust is probably a good move.

I don't have my MOT certificate to hand, but from memory I think even though my car has a CAT, the cat test box has N/A in it.

Also, does anyone know where the CAT is located on a ZX6R J model. I had section of the downpipes just before the end can cut off and replaced with a new s/s piece. Some sort of non moving valve like thingy used to live in that area of the original pipe. After the new straight through piece was fitted, the bike needed a couple hundred rpm more to pull off smoothly but never lost a bit of steam before the redline. It now just keeps trying to power its was past the limiter . Not sure if that was the CAT or summat else.

From a bike, I think you'd be fine.

For a car, you put the old cat in the boot take it to a friendly MOT place.

Slip them a tenner to "put the old cat back on just for the test ".

Job done.

The CAT is in the end-can on most Kwaks. (and most Jap bikes). you probably removed Kwaks version of the EXUP valve (if the J-model has one?? - I know Honda does one - Mitz's 929Blade has an EXUP type valve).

Ta for the replies.

Got the PCIII fitted a few days ago. That and these cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10460&item=7912771125&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

should do the trick. Dyno visit required, obviously.
