Cars (sorry) - Parkers Guide Prices

How reliable are the Parkers price guides when it comes to selling a car?

The reason I ask is that according to Parkers my car is currently valued as follows:

Franchised Dealer £ 6660
Independent Dealer £ 6195
Private Good £ 5040
Private Poor £ 4160
Part Exchange £ 4715

Now I have just been offered £3000 absolute max for part ex, interesting I bought the car from an independant dealer last August for £5500 which also blows those prices out of the water.

Now there is one factor that may be a fault here, and that is the fact that the car has 70k on it, and those prices are based around 30k - that being said I cant see the additional miles knocking nearly 2 grand off the part ex - might be wrong though. Anybody got a full Parkers account that can do valuations on mileage??

Also while I am here I need to buy a new car, something that will ferry a family of 4 and associated shit around. 2 kids under 3, so it needs to have a ferry sized boot.

The car I have now (Renault Laguna) is forcing me to considered invading an oil producing country, so I also need a car with decent MPG (maybe a diesel?).

Trade tends to use Glass' and/or Cap black/red (they vary significantly sometimes)... at the end of the day it's very subjective and depends on the assessments of margins and marketability made by the suit you talk to. They'll skin you if they can (just like you would..)

Trade in - excellent: £5,050.00
Trade in - average: £4,530.00
Trade in - below average: £3,970.00
Retail price: £6,690.00

Also paid for a search on Parkers and got:

On Parkers guide - choose Reviews then Technical Data and select your car.
You then get a pdf all about your selected car, including adjustments for mileage.

Just like houses they're worth what someone is willing to pay. Get cleaning it and go sell it to 'em

The thing is that Parkers dont really take into account the amount of a particular model thats around at the moment. Loads of new Lagunas on the market which in turn pushes the price down, that makes the dealer make a low offer as it might sit on the forecourt or end up fetching a low price at auction.

Parkers are definately well out. Better off using glass's guide as this is what most of the dealers use. Wouldn't ever part exchange personnally, if it's priced well it should sell quickly in the autotrader or on ebay.

I would never ever buy a rep-mobile again, the biggest cost of car ownership is depreciation, buying a 407/mondeo/vectra etc is a sure fire way to chuck thousands away.

I bought a 6 month old mondeo ST24 for £12,000, I thought I'd stolen it as it was 22k when new, 18 months later I struggled to get £7,500 for it and it was on below average miles.

I now have an audi A6 avant quattro thet I bought at £3500 under book from a car auction, i've had it 12 months and book price is still £2000 more than I paid for it, even if I have to sell it at below trade I won't be losing on it.
