Buying an old RD (air or water type)

I rather fancy an old stroker - call it a desire to re-live my mis-spent formative motorcycling years if you like. Does anyone know of info leading to where folk have these things for sale? Clubs etc?

Reckon it'd be a bit of fun.

Thanks.

Padgetts up near Sheffield had some brand new 250LCs in a little while back, might still have.

I was toying with the idea till I went up and they told me 4k for one . Depends how much you've got to play with s'pose .

"(%&£)£("*&$* !!!!!

I'd reckon on about a grand for a good clean air-cooled 250DX (which is what I rather fancy).

there's an old RD250 sitting at the back of my garage, not mine. It's an air-cooled early one, blue/white rounded tank, the first or second RD250 after the YDS7. Could ask my mate if you're interested ...

Where you based gromit?

Bomma - I'll get back to you.

Lau - I'm doing the Ace Toy Run next sunday (take it you mean 21st?) so wouldn't be able to get there (working this sun too). Hadn't thought of jumbles though - do you see many complete bikes at these? Ones that actually run/worth buying?

Yorick - I've seen a very original (just got a different seat) 250DX in yellow/black with 11k on the clock for 995. I'm very very tempted (it's at a dealer and will have 3 months' warranty). Twitchy twitchy goes the wallet!!

Not even as fast as a 125 nowadays

I remember it well

Also remember my first ride on a 'proper' bike - a GT250 (non Ram-air!). Jeeezus H Krist....who could possibly control such a beast??? When you're 16 and used to a 1973 Honda PC50 it's amazing what feels fast.

must have had a couple of dozen aircooled 250/400s.
i'd say the 250 is less fun but also less fragile than the 400.
as with any old stroker, check it doesn't rattle too much and doesn't drink it's gear oil.indicated by tons more smoke out of the right pipe than the left.time for new crank seals and possibly new main bearings if it does.

some bits very rare now, good seats, rear mudguards etc.

i like that, turn it up.

I had a fizzie as my 1st bike then went straight to an RD250(1978)
the 1st corner I came to in the wet nearly threw me as I applied a lot more power than I was used to and the back tyre stepped out about a foot scared the shit out of me so I was more careful after that.

About 10 yrs later in 88 I bought an RD400 for £300, no MOT but it sailed through, that was real fun, never wore a front tyre out beacuse it was never on the ground.

Stupidly I sold it for buttons a couple of years later, mint it was

Never had an LC but the RD400 was smiles all the way:smoke:

No as in this coming weekend 12th?

It's pot luck, some months theres stacks of them, other months you might find it to be mainly spares, but a lot of the people that go are traders, and go every month.
Newark is the biggest in the country, some months theres over 3000 stalls.
You do get a lot of shit heaps, theres no doubt about it, but theres also a fair few good bikes there aswell, runners, t+t, ride away jobs.

Best bet, buy a cheapish straight LC or YPVS for 4-500 quid. Budget for an engine rebuild which is gonna cost probably 350 quid if you do it yourself. Thats £120 for rebores with pistons and £150 for a crank plus seals and gaskets. The engines are a doddle to strip and rebuild.

Spend a bit more on tyres, maybe a new shock and fork seals/springs bearings etc. You should be able to get sorted for about a grand and have plenty of smiles for not much more than some people's insurance premiums

Many people slag YPVS's off for not being a 'proper' LC but ultimately the engines are more reliable and there's still loads of spares about. Drop me a PM if you need any more info or contacts

Not wholly correct - the GT came out in '71, then went Ramair in '72 until 75 - the '76 lost the Ramair (although some '75 models crept in that year). Mate of mine had one (a 78 model so one of the last - it was a lovely bike) I'll dig out some pics if I can find them. There was also one for sale on Bike Trader last night - looked rather nice too. All standard, 600 quid. Sorely tempted.

A few X7's but always felt these were a bit fragile?

Thanks to everyone for all the info. Much appreciated.
