my boyfriend had one for a while,he wasnt too keen on it though as he said it was underpowered and frustrating to ride, didnt handle too badly according to him, they are good for shortys, hes only about 5'5" and could reach floor fine,he sold and got a blade which suited his riding style better.

I did look at buying one a while back, thought it would be good fun, but the guy I knew at the dealer persuaded me not to. Fundamentally good fun, but apparently deeply ropey build & finish quality, not to mention dodgy electrics, thanks to being built in Italy.

What about the 5' 1/2" Midget that I live with, would she be able to reach the deck?

Tha only bike she can comfortably reach the ground is a Babyblade, is it as low as one of them?

Mate of mine used to have one. He said it was pretty underpowered. Apparantly (I don't know how true this is) the XT660 engine in them doesn't like to be revved that much so hard road use results in a fairly fundamental disintegration inside the motor.

That's one of the few he hasn't owned! Thought about it a while ago, but it never came to anything.

Indeed I have. My wife and I have had three SZRs, one crashed, one stolen and one stolen/recovered! Still got that one, just rebored and running lovelily.

They are basically a XT660 engine in a TZ250 frame with USD Paioli forks, Brembo brakes and rims and weird styling.

Dodgy electrics? None of the bikes that I've had suffered from this. Build quality is far from ropey, too.

This is true. They are underpowered. In stock trim they're only 47bhp at crank ( 'bout 40bhp at the rear wheel ) giving a realistic top end of about 115mph. These bikes aren't about that though. They're light and flickable and a joy in the twisties. Doesn't someone have a sig about preferring to be a quick rider on a slow bike than a slow rider on a quick bike? That's what the SZR is all about.

As to hard road use causing disintegration, it does require having the oil level keeping an eye on as it runs a 'slave' oil tank which make it awkward for judging the oil level. Regular changes are recommended. I've not had one blow up on me yet!

More power is available though. About £1000 will get you a 686cc rebore, Carillo conrod, stage II tune, modified carb and 'naughty' exhaust. I did this to one of our SZR and got upwards of 55BHP. The Carillo conrod is good for 9,000rpm and if you add a particular TDM CDI unit, you can raise the redline from stock 7,000 to 8,250. In a bike as light as this, this is a serious increase in power and changes the bike from a really fun ride into serious 'grin factor' mode.

Having said that, even in standard trim the SZR660 is a fine bike, good for shorties, cheap insurance and cheap to buy. There aren't that many in the UK ( I think they sold about 400 or thereabouts between 96-98 ) and you shouldn't have to pay more than £1500 for a good one.

PM me if you want any more info.
