Best telephone package/deal available... Any ideas?

My folks have finally decided to move away from BT (who have been an absolute nightmare over the last year) and onto a new package with a different company. They have yet to chose that new company/package and that's why I'm calling upon the collective knowledge of VD.

Strangely, I have just received a flyer from The Phone Co-op who offer a much better package than BT and they operate in an ethically aware manner (which I approve of). I doubt that their deal is as good as other companies, so I'm looking to find out about other peoples' experiences...

I've done a search and couldn't find anything recent along these lines; so can someone explain to me what to look for, what to stay clear of and what companies are generally considered the "best" available?

Cheers,
Charlie

I'd stay with BT for the line.

Use 18866 or 1899 as the least cost providers. There are others - read through this too. You might need a dialler - I use one from Orchid

Any use?

Didn't Google recently announce they're going to get in to providing 'Broadband' phone calls?

But BT charge 30 quid [a quarter] just for line rental and many BB suppliers are offering all in [global télé, net & terestial phoneline] for that alone.

I've got to sort one asap.

Have a NTL device already pre-installed in [our new] home, but having heard the woes from here I'd prefer to use Telewest (but aint sure (yet) if they have the coverage]. Ooooooooooooo, more speed less haste, skipper.

Yep but read the Monesaving website page...

Talk-Talk* from the Carphone Warehouse is currently £7.99 for its unlimited UK landline calls anytime, plus sign up in September and the first three months are free. Thus across a year you're effectively paying £6 per month.

This means for anyone who makes over 200 landline calls a month (6 a day) it's cheaper than call1899 for landlines. Although don't use it for calling mobiles as there are much cheaper options.

Call1899's costs are simply a fraction of what you'd pay a normal provider. For someone paying BT Together a typical £25 a month for a mix of calls (excluding line rental), you could save a few pounds by switching to Talk Talk or other normally advertised providers, but by using Call1899 it drops to around £12. That's a saving of over £150 over a year.
