Audio to MP3 conversion software recommendation please

Right, here's the situation:

Partners daughter has been given an MP3 player by her father for Crimbo. It's a basic 128MB flash memory stick with headphones. So...no software, etc.

This PC is running WinME and Windows Media Player 9. As far as I can tell, it does not offer MP3 file conversion from audio CD.

You can buy approved plug-ins, but I really wanted to know if anyone can recommend a free download [and use :dozey

file conversion package that I [or rather she] can use to rip her favourite CD tracks to her MP3 player?
