Recommend me a decent, well, the best you can think of, digi camaera for around the £50-£60 mark.

The thing to know is that the megapixel rating is to do with image size, NOT image quality. You need no more than 3 megapixel.

The cheapest cameras will use AA batteries so you'll need to invest in some rechargables. More expensive use Li Ion, like your mobile phone. These hold a charge for much longer.

Do a bit of reading on the older cameras on www.dpreview.com and www.steves-digicams.com. Pick well known brands, Nikon, Canon etc. The research is worth while so you narrow it down to a few cameras that fit the bill.

Check out, Ebay, your local camera shop, Jessops, Tesco, Argos etc for any deals. Bear in mind that most camera come with a small memory card so you'll need to budget for an upgrade is you want to store more than a dozen or so pictures.

Cheers Pirahna, a push in the right direction.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that I also need to find out what the lens resolution is as some manufacturers claim resolution using software interpolation figures. Does that sound about right?

I think you mean zoom.

Zoom comes in 2 flavours, optical and digital. Optical is zoom using the lens which is best, most cameras use 3 times optical. Digital is using software on the camera which isn't so good. Cameras often have both, using the optical first then using digital after is you need to zoom further.

Try to avoid cameras which only have digital zoom.

Last year I bought my daughter a little HP 4Mpixel thing for £70 - 3x opticalzoom - works great. Somethign like that would do.

Have you considered refurbished? You can get refurbished Fuji cameras from Fuji's online shop.
There are four priced between £50 and £60, e.g. Finepix A400 - 4 megapixel, 3x optical zoom - £59.49
