Gareth - post up the questiosn here and you'll gain more from everyone's experience.

The main prob with sponsorship is unless you have something unique to offer (Ie you really are a racing god or you have unfeasibly large boobies (not that that helped ) as a rookie and newcomer to the sport many people wont be interested.

IME calling people rather than sending out a load of bumph is what works best, have your bumph ready for when people show interest but don't go to huge expence of producing flyers etc as it just doesn't seem to be econimical

Concentrate on your strengths and WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR SPONSOR rather than what they can do for you as the first off but be clear what you are looking for in return

PS WIngnut - Joe's Tattoos - where are they based?

I have an unfair advantage with getting sponsors, as not only can I promise them top 50% finishes most of the time (touch woody), but also coverage in an international monthly magazine.

One way of helping to swing the balance may be to approach your local newspaper, see if they'll cover your racing antics. If you can walk up to a potential sponsor and show them a letter from the paper, indicating that they're interested in running pics of you racing (showing off their stickers, obviously) and maybe even a little 'thanks to' bit at the end of the article, it might help.

You need to think about how you can display their name best - logo up the bike, also think about your van, leathers, tent/awning, pushbike, lid, generator, fucking cigarette packets if they want... Also offer to get the stickers made up yourself, so they haven't so much to think about. Get some striking logos done, so they stand out. And then its up to you to get noticed! Whether that means a succession of trophies or a succession of gravel trap adventures, make sure you become notorious for something. For example, before a Minitwin race, everyone would watch Nodi Purdon as he'd invariably stoppie up to his grid spot. It got him bollockings, but also notoriety. Combined with Bob Collins' post-race wheelies, it made Carbontek/CTR Performance well-known for being entertaining and the bad boys of the paddock.

Hope that helps dude.

I could design it for you - I design a lot of tribal stuff. My arm is all my own design, and you've seen that. Then all you need to do is take the design to a local artist.

Interested?

As much as they like as often as they like i'd have thought.

UNDERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the wall. TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.

Gareth, one big thing to remember, present yourself well. Be smart..dress wise. Dont talk too much, ie come across as a know it all.

Always thank your sponsors, whether or not they are giving you discounts, freebies etc they all deserve thanks.

Dont call your team something stupid either, i just cant understand why people do that as it is soo unprofessional...like team dick...or team dirty pants...just dont do it!!.

I am lucky as we can draw in help through the shop, bit like wingnut. We have something that we can offer the sponsor, by means of offering their product to the masses and our team gets lots of attention due to the large amounts of hits on our shop site and through the showroom.

Think of what you can do for them to raise their profile.

Good luck!

Oh and thanks wingnut for the thanks...your a star

Ask for the moon, and you'll get a cloud.

Seriously, do a breakdown of costs, both initial start up (bike, van, kit) and running costs (race fees, practice days, tyres, fuel etc) and put it all in a big list. Show them this (well presented, don't do it on the back of a Rizla packet in pink crayon) and ask them if there's any category that they might be able to cover in its entirety. Doing it that way, you might get your race fees or tyres for the year covered, or they might buy you a van (approach van hire places!).

Ask for more than you expect to get

Yup no worries Gareth. I've done something similar for Rich Keohane, it's important for you to get it started then get others to have a look!

First point to remember about sponsers; get their details right!! Joes Tattoo Studio is in Gorleston-on-Sea you muppet (which is just south of Great Yarmouth).

Gareth, if you need a hand drop me a mail through the Naked Racing Project website.

Having a website obviously helps promote sponsors - if you haven't a site of your own I'd give you a page on ours which could help BUT you'll have to strip off that girly fairing

All the best

Sponsorship is all about getting the sponsors name out there. The more opportunity you can give them to get their name/product visible, the more likely they are to invest in you.

We do press relations and promotion for a few teams, submitting press releases to all our contacts when they have something newsworthy to say. These include our pictures of the riders and prove very effective in assisting to secure and maintain sponsorship. We also construct websites and produce other promotional materials.

Nobody will give you anything unless they can see that they will get value for money from the level of exposure you can give them - whatever that is.

As someone commented earlier, the main thing is to be in a position to have something newsworthy to say. Unfortunately, running around at the back (whilst you will be enjoying yourself and full credit for being out there) is not going to make the headlines and is therefore less attractive to sponsors.

Come and have a chat at Pembrey. You can usually find us at either the TCG Motorsport or Go Star Racing tents, or just collar us in the paddock!
