Gareth - post up the questiosn here and you'll gain more from everyone's experience.
The main prob with sponsorship is unless you have something unique to offer (Ie you really are a racing god or you have unfeasibly large boobies (not that that helped
) as a rookie and newcomer to the sport many people wont be interested.
IME calling people rather than sending out a load of bumph is what works best, have your bumph ready for when people show interest but don't go to huge expence of producing flyers etc as it just doesn't seem to be econimical
Concentrate on your strengths and WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR SPONSOR rather than what they can do for you as the first off but be clear what you are looking for in return
PS WIngnut - Joe's Tattoos - where are they based?
I have an unfair advantage with getting sponsors, as not only can I promise them top 50% finishes most of the time (touch woody), but also coverage in an international monthly magazine.
One way of helping to swing the balance may be to approach your local newspaper, see if they'll cover your racing antics. If you can walk up to a potential sponsor and show them a letter from the paper, indicating that they're interested in running pics of you racing (showing off their stickers, obviously) and maybe even a little 'thanks to' bit at the end of the article, it might help.
You need to think about how you can display their name best - logo up the bike, also think about your van, leathers, tent/awning, pushbike, lid, generator, fucking cigarette packets if they want... Also offer to get the stickers made up yourself, so they haven't so much to think about. Get some striking logos done, so they stand out. And then its up to you to get noticed! Whether that means a succession of trophies or a succession of gravel trap adventures, make sure you become notorious for something. For example, before a Minitwin race, everyone would watch Nodi Purdon as he'd invariably stoppie up to his grid spot. It got him bollockings, but also notoriety. Combined with Bob Collins' post-race wheelies, it made Carbontek/CTR Performance well-known for being entertaining and the bad boys of the paddock.
Hope that helps dude.
