Might have been trapped but I wonder how he'd have been without it?

I'd rather be trapped, and relatively injury free, than have half my face missing or have a crushed head.

Ditto, a cave in skull is far worse than the stress of being trapped for that time.

Helpful picture of what a helmet might look like. I'd have been stumped without it.

"...half an hour to delicately free the man..."

Have they not hear of a jack? It should take all of five minutes, even allowing for one on each side

But first they have to do a risk assessment and submit the forms. Then a health and safety person has to be present to oversee the work and ensure everyone is dressed in appropriate protective clothing.
A second health and safety person has to be available to sign off the first ones findings as correct. Then of course the rescuers have to be supervised on how they lift or move heavy weight.
Oh yes, someone must have been on a course and received a diploma in undoing helmet straps.

Still, they could have just dragged him out by the heels and left his head behind!

Nah, it's Australia Michael, first someone ask's "you right mate?" then when you have ascertained the vicim is indeed ok, just stuck you stand around and laugh at them for a while and ask them how much they would like a tasty beer right now, then place a tinnie just out of reach... then when the fun wears off, and the beer is warm and you want to get back to the pub for a cold one you get the dopey prick unstuck.
Your say
