Talkback: Ducati tests 900cc engine for 2012 MotoGP

I don't really think they should be allowed to do this.

Surely it is blatantly obvious that the ONLY reason MotoGP is going back to 1000cc is because the 800cc's are boring? So, if Ducati go somewhere inbetween, this will surely give them a machine that has all of the speed of an 800cc (which are quicker round a racetrack than a 1000cc) but none of the excitement of a 1000cc. As much as that might win them races, isn't that missing the point completely?

The going back to 1000cc should be exactly that, not less.

Surely they impose a maximum, so if the designers at Ducati feel they can get better performance from a 900 then that is their option, any other team have the same option, as for less excitement, if 900 is better than 1000 in a race, then that is more exciting surely?

Okay! where does this bit go? must get a manual!!!

"if 900 is better than 1000 in a race, then that is more exciting surely?"

No, as faster doesn't always equal more exciting. The 800s are faster than the 990s, but the 990 were more exciting. And Moto2 is more exciting than the 800s too.

Some very ignorant misunderstanding shown here. The change in capacity is ENTIRELY down to the horrendous costs of the 800cc machines and their fuel-management and traction control systems. TC and associated software can run up to a Million pounds. It is hoped that road-derived 1,000cc engines with specific bore centres to keep out exotica - and up to 1000cc engines that are " protoypes " - without any except basic anti-highside TC will offer cheaper racing and fuller grids. That's it! Simple.

It seems to me, Hey You, that you are the one guilty of ignorant misunderstanding. Yes, costs are an issue, but what makes you think the change in capacity is ENTIRELY down to the horrendous costs? A big part of the cost increase which had nothing to do with the change to 800s was the departure of all of the fag company sponsors.

A raft of cost cutting measures have already been introduced: less practice, less testing, less engines, less tyres, no active suspension, no launch control, no fancy metal composites, blah, blah, blah...

The fuel limit is only one litre less than was allowed for the 990s in 2006, and is confirmed as remaining for the 1000s & 800s (24 litres will be allowed for privateers). Traction control has not been mentioned yet, but is unlikely to be taken away as the MSMA want it.

That's it. It's not simple.
