Recommend a helmet for Upright riding.

I recently replaced my Arai Quantum F (after a crash) with an Arai Astro J.

The problem is that the vents all seem to be designed for a "racing" posture. ie with the helmet canted forward around 75 degrees from the fully upright position. Typical racing crouch.

In this position the chin vents guide air up onto the visor - or at least between the visor and my face.

In the "upright" position that I adopt on the Mirth (and on the BM, when I get it), the chin vent directs air directly into my eyes. This is really irritating, and also means that the visor mists up rather badly (even with it cracked open a touch!)

Sooo - can anyone recommend a helmet that will give me the same protection and be as comfy as an Arai (eg with soft lining material - not a Shoei -tried one and it's like wearing sandpaper! ), but will also vent air decently in an "upright" position?

(oh yeah - posted here cos there's more sensible riders here!)

My dianese lid is great in the CBs position, until it rains, and then I might as well be wearing this

so, avoid.

try the Shuberth S1, quite light considering the flip down dark visor. They dont mist up and have good ventilation. Cheap as chips if like me you buy from Germany

hmmm - tried one of those at the Ally Pally show - and couldn't get it off fast enough - there was a ridge / pad in the liner at the forehead that just dug in and was painful.

I'll have another go though - maybe that one was duff?

The Deauville lends itself to a reasonably upright riding position and I have a Schuberth Concept.

The ventilation is good and it's not bad for misting up, the main drawback I find is that like most flip-fronts I've tried it's very noisy.

I've got a Quantum F and don't have the problems you describe (sit fairly upright on Ducati Monster), try sticking a foggy mask in it ( the one that covers your nose and mouth and keeps them separate from your eyes IYSWIM). I find the vents in that lid are really good for keeping cool. The mask renders the chin vents useless though.

Everything I post is just my personal opinion not that of Visordown yadah yadah yadah. I think everything's shite and if I'm slagging something in particular off at the moment, it's just 'cos I'm thinking of it at the time, not 'cos it's any worse than anything else.

Nolan Classic flip front. Quite happy for upright riding (based on the D'Oh-Ville, a Piaggio X9 and an ET4)

THB - I doubt I could go back to full face anyway now..... so I guess I'm going to be biased here.....

(sorry YON - Jack made the same mistake in General).

it's NOT the Qf I have problems with - it's the new AstroJ.

I've had a flip-chin before (Vemar VRS) and while I did like it - I'd rather have a quieter full-face.

ok now this may sound daft but have u contacted arai themselves, as they may be aware of this and could well have a solution?

HOWEVER, if they arent aware of this issue u have, they would like to know how they can solve it, as they would like to avoid bad publicity of any kind, especially since VD has over 13,000 members, word of mouth recommendations or otherwise can have far reaching consequences. If for example each member of VD read this thread and mentioned it to 5 people who then mention it to another 5 people, u can see what i mean!

No helmet is necessary in the upright position - it is the upside down position that requires a helmet.

CJ!! You're back How the devil are you? Seen you lurking a time or two...wondered what was going on.

Oh..topic...well, the B*W flippy fronts are OK for upright riding. Noisy...but OK. I assume Schuberth are about the same.

I've got an Arai RV and think it's brilliant. It's white, bought for use on the Beemer , but I often use it on the Cibber too cos it's just so comfortable

I'll admit I don't have experience with many helmets (as the actress said to the Bishop) But I've not found my lid (Nolan Classic) particularly noisy.

Mind you - with earplugs in I seem to go deaf anyway, and with them out I tend to have the radio piped in through the Autocom......

on that front I may contact Phoenix- but not sure how much help they'll be.

Arai's are superb helmets and I'd ALWAYS recommend them (they've saved my head enough times for me to do that without guile).

well - seeing as Phoenix ARE the Arai representatives in UK, it would seem logical.

unless of course you happen to have the personal bedroom telephone number of the Chief Executive of Arai??
