Boing!

Test routes being taken off line!

I suppose it would make the 'independent driving' part a lot less tricky if people knew where the routes were!

yes. but its not going to take a lot of working out  the routes that can be used to *follow the directions for xxxx * and as driving instructors can sit in the car with pupils during the test ( and we can follow ) they will not stay unknown for long ,

I've just posted something to that effect on the blog, because it turns out the examiner may ask you to follow signs or may give you DIRECTIONS - something that wasn't made clear in the video I saw.

I was wondering how following the route would affect the test if you got lost (I've got the memory of a goldfish when it comes to following directions) and promptly got a comment on it from a DSA person:

"It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way – that can happen to the most experienced drivers.

Independent driving is not a test of your orientation and navigation skills. Driving independently means making your own decisions – this includes deciding when it’s safe and appropriate to ask for confirmation about where you’re going.

If you ask for a reminder of the directions, the examiner will confirm them to you.

If you go off the independent driving route it won’t affect the result of your test unless you commit a driving fault.

If you go off the route or take a wrong turning, the examiner will help you to get back on the route and continue with the independent driving.

If there are poor or obscured traffic signs, the examiner will give you directions until you can see the next traffic sign."

So basically you can ignore the route if you want and so long as you don't commit any driving faults, there's no problem with that.

I did ask how a motorcycle candidate would ask for reminders of directions in the interests of being treated equally with car candidates but have had no reply to date.

examiner said that if they think the candidate may have forgoten ( ie no signal where one might be expected) they will make a prompt or a reminder of the way that they should be going ,as long as it is not to late for the candidate to go the correct way safely

Thanks... so in other words, they'll just tell you where to go...

All sounds a bit pointless.

You can still get the old routes from various online sources. They can't have changed that much!

There's also now a dedicated page on the DSA website for claiming back out-of-pocket expenses for cancelled tests?

I wonder if that includes the school / instructor that now has to fit in an extra day to take the trainee to the test centre when they could be running a new course? Somehow I doubt it?
