The A377 is 35 miles of biking heaven. Pick it up from the Barnstaple by-pass (A39) and head south through Bishops Tawton, keeping to 30mph (we don't want to annoy the locals). Once past the garage on your right it's time to go.
I strongly recommend you look at the road on an Ordnance Survey map as this will show you the route in more detail as it follows the River Taw. Ridden the TT course? This road replicates it with flowing bends, minimal traffic and no speed cameras (well, not fixed ones...), and it's all surrounded by Devon's best countryside. There are a few small villages with 30mph limits - Crediton, Copplestone, Newton St Cyres - but they're good for calming down and resting aching wrists.
Points to remember: if you're not used to narrow lanes and tall hedges keep your speed down, and look out for farm machinery and 'grockles' (tourists) in the summer. The surface isn't brilliant either, and be aware of dampness through the forest sections.
If you're heading further south then stop at Bridge Motorcycles at Marsh Barton on the edge of Exeter, off the southern end of the A377.
