Following a role reversal at Yamaha with Ben Spies heading to MotoGP and James Toseland taking the WSB seat, it was obvious there would be comparisons between the current and former World Superbike champions.

The above graphs charts each riders’ points haul after each of the first five races, with consideration also towards JT’s previous championship winning performances.

As can be seen from the results, there is a pattern to Toseland's finishes with a good start followed by a loss of form then a gradual rise. 2010 has been a slow start but JT appeared to be improving slightly with podium finishes at the fourth round in Assen and race one at Monza but a crash in race two at the fifth round put a halt to his progress.

In regards to Ben Spies there were a few teething problems with the start to his year with crashes and running out of fuel in Monza. Ultimately the graph does not reflect Spies' surge to championship favourite as many of the results are wins followed by DNF and low ranking positions. However, the jump to a double victory at the second round in Qatar proved the American's talent.

Overall, if the two riders were facing off this year in the World Superbike championship Toseland would ultimately be struggling at 96 points, behind Spies' 146 points tally. Obviously outside elements would change the above but it goes to show that 2010 has not been a walk in the park for James Toseland.
